Hard to tell on an automatic. When's the last time you flushed the tranny and how many miles on it?

Then I suggest doing a tranny flush first. It's cheap, and a good idea. One of the valves may be sticking. Eliminate the most likely, and go from there.

Go ahead and do that, and post back. You really WANT it to be the fluid. Getting into the valving and solenoids on the tranny is a PAIN.
But not impossible

D3 is for city and "sportier" driving, cause it locks out 4th or overdrive gear. D4 is for cruising and highway. Neither will hurt the car, but you don't want to drive fast on the freeway in D3. Keeps the rpm kinda high.

That's probably it. But do the flush anyway, and see how it feels. Tranny will last longer, too.
