what would happen if i cleaned my k&n filter and didnt re-oil it? would it be a big deal. i dont really like the oil, i find that it gums up my intake manifold.

na u dont need to re-oil it. i havent, n its fine. my parents have it on each of there cars to. a long as you clean it right, you'll be strate. if you want you can even buy a cleaning kit for it from k&n, but its not worth the $ in my opinion

gearbox's thread was very interesting. got me thinking that maybe its the filter and not the oil thats gunking up my intake. im gonna try the purolator cone and see how i like it.

Running with an unoiled K&N filter is the same as running without a filter. There are a hell of a lot of holes in the K&N filtering media which in turn WILL ALLOW large particles to pass. If you do not oil the filter, expect increased engine wear from sand and metal cylinder shavings caused by sand. Dont take your chances like pLaYa6tNine. Your engine blowing at 5x,xxx miles and your engine blowing at xxx,xxx miles is a BIG DEAL.

If you dont like oil, go to a paper cone or the stock intake box.

Wow this is amazing. The K&N barely filters when it's oiled. How well do you think it's goona stop dirt without it? Have fun destroying your car. I would strongly suggest a paper filter if you want to keep the intake. I just went back to the stock airbox with napa gold replacement.

Yes it is a big deal. If you dont like the oil, dont use a filter that REQUIRES oil.

Can you please provide some sort of scientific proof that its "fine" to not re-oil the K&N filter? Have you done a UOA since the last time you or your parents installed an un-oiled k&n filter? What was the ppm of silica? Are you saving $10 lousy bucks on the re-oiling kit so that you could spend $1000+ for an engine rebuild/engine swap in the near future?

Streetglower, that is an understatement. Oiling doesnt just help out, it is required. You should oil up the K&N so that it can ACTUALLY filter.

If you still want some sort of performance filter, the apexi power intake has superior filtration over K&N. It's supposed to last the life of the car with hardly any maintenance. It's a cone style filter that does not use oil and still filters and flows better than any other brand. You just need to find a way to attach it to the intake pipe. HKS foam filters are the absolute WORST I've even seen and don't filter at all!
