Manual Tranny Fluid change on an 02 civic ex. What tools are needed?
The title says it all. I know there are two bolts to remove(the 17mm fill and 3/8 drain bolt), but Im wondering what kind of tool I will need to syphon in the fluid(and where can I get a tool kit). Also, are the crush washers any different from the oil drain plug ones? Ill be using redline mtl in the trans fluid.
Comments and suggestions are needed.
Thanks,
Aaron

1. the manual calles for 10w-30/40 motor oil in our trannies. (fyi) but it should b fine.
2. theres a drain bolt and fill bolt there right on top of eachother. just take the bottom 1 out and let it drain and when its done put the plug back in (cant realy remember but i dont think there's a crush washer). than u can use a funnel with a long extention hose on the end insert it in the fill hole from the top and start pouring till it runns out. it takes abou 2 qrts. than insert fill bolt.
btw: its alot easier if u have a cold air intake.

I don't remember about the washers but I recommend removing the front right wheel for more space. I bought some $.99 plastic cap with a tube thing from Autozone, screwed that onto the MTF container, then squeezed the hell out of it and held the tube end into the upper transmision hole. Takes about 1.6qts. ~15 minutes.
The redline mtl is equally compatible with the honda mtf, and in fact, is better for cold weather shifting and all around performance. It meets the gl4 spec and the 5/10w30 spec, so its perfect for the tranny.

yeah i can't argue it's more expensive compared to standard motor oil, but in the grand scheme of things, it is cheap. 1.6L every 15k-30k miles. much better than my last change of 4L of VW ATF @ $21 a bottle (discounted).
but yeah, I see your point, we are getting hosed

Easiest way I've found to fill the tranny is to make yourself a Transmission Fluid Bong. Just the way it sounds, get a funnel and a hose. Get someone to stand over the engine bay, feed the hose down behind the engine on the right hand side, the other guy grabs it and stuffs it in the fill hole. Then the top guy pours 1.75 quarts of it in. I usually like to pour in the whole 2nd quart in and let the excess run out the fill hole. Pouring the new stuff in stirs up some gunk and you can get a little more out of there.
remove fill bolt FIRST :-)
Just an FYI... remove the fill / check bolt first. It's always nice to know that you are able to fill it before you drain it.
I'm probably going to do the MTL change in a week or two and put in Redline. From what I hear, people are either really liking it because it clears up the whole cold weather synchro engagement things, or really hate it because they feel like RL is a bit "notchier," which I would probably dig.
Ehh, to each his own I guess.
