RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
As alot of you know, I tried this with white vinyl and it just didn't work. Color faded, and I ended up taking it apart.
So thanks to Ironcow, I decided to redo it. This time I went with a grey color type polyester fabric. It almost feels like leather and matches really well. Hard to see exactly in the dark, but here you go. I've only done one door, so three more to go.

Nice. The material I got is suede I think. It's easier to take apart the doors for sedan, but you also have more doors to do
New pics tomorrow in daylight.
New pics tomorrow in daylight. That looks sick. I was planning on doing dark blue leather in my sedan. Check out www.leatherseats.com -you can get strips of leather in a lot of colors and leather covers for your seats. My brother and I installed leather red and black seat covers in his WRX it turned out really sick.

Well I got my gray suede from Joann fabrics. I bought a big piece for $8, enough to do all four doors. I'm just worried what the water will do.

I pulled off the old cloth, wiped with acetone, sanded, and sprayed 3M adhesive glue. Then I laid down the suede. Only problem I had was one door piece got a little glue on it, and the top part wouldn't tuck in enough. I was trying to hurry, though.

If its 100% real suede (which i doubt since u spent only 8$), then it would get hard if it got wet.
If you have like a polyester/suede type thing, then its fine if it gets wet just, dont dump water on it, lol
I have black suede but, havent put it in yet.

here are some pics of my progress
what i did to give it more padding is i cut the edges of the stock fabric off and then i glued my new stuff right over top and then tucked the edges in from there
i think it came out pretty nicely

Not a bad idea at all.... Looks pretty sweet and is quite unique (not just doing the color match thing)
Just can't picture myself going into a fabric store though with my buddies.... LOL

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
redoing the fabric a third time! lol. using similar grey suede type material as last time, except not rushing so much. im shocked how crappy the last set was, some of the fabric wasnt even tucked, and alot of it had peeled from the plastic. i finally finished the two front doors, still have the rears to do (lousy sedan lol). i ended up stripping off the old dynamat on the door metal, then using butyl ribbon to seal around the speaker spacer and hold up various wires to the door. for the plastic panel, i scraped and sanded all the old glue off and used a double sided fabric/sewing tape from ben franklin to "glue" the fabric down. so far it worked pretty well, and not as messy as the glue if i decide to change fabric later. i made sure everything was cut properly and then taped it all down. also added some thick carpet foam on the rear, held on with the butyl tape. i stuffed some butyl behind my tweeter panel too. heres pics of the passenger door. driver door is being installed today too. i was surprised just how little difference the old dynamat made, and how much more difference the added carpet pad made in terms of road noise. the padding is placed very carefully so there is no issue with the panel going back on. the locking rods do not rub either.

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
because the jute padding actually absorbs sound and turns it into heat dynomat stop resonance from transferring from the sheet metal its not really sound proofing.what happened to the 3M insulate ???

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
was too expensive in smaller quantity ($5 per sq ft). i paid $20 for enough carpet pad to do all the 4 doors ($0.60 per sq ft). and i prolly will go back for some more to stuff in various panels and the rear seats.

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
yeah, the floor already has a pretty thick foam so im not gonna bother, the headliner is tricky cause the moonroof slides back inside and will get stuck if i put any padding. if i decide to remove the motor sometime, then yeah i will do the whole roof too. its really loud up there and you can see all the empty space looking inside from the moonroof.

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
yeah i saw much thinner stuff that might work, i prolly will get some for the middle side pillars and other low clearance areas. only problem is it wont work as well. thicker = better sound blocking. but better than nothing. taking that hoodliner off is a pain.

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
homedepot. i got the thickest one they had, with a moisture barrier (not so much for waterproofing, but it sticks to the butyl better when i was attaching to the door). i may go back and get some of their "blue" skinny mat for the tighter spots.
Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
believe or not you can get the same material that is used in dynomat there also its used to insulate sideing its called ice and vapor block it comes in huge rolls for half the price as dynomat and some even have the aluminium backing.
Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
that looks like typically thick carpet underlay and i was going to recommend the underlay you place underneath a 'hardwood floating floor' but it looks like you already know about it. its about 1/3 the thickness but does the same type of job and yes its blue. its very very nice stuff to work with too. we used that stuff all throughout our house when we put our new floating hardwood floor in.

Re: RETRY: Door panel DIY fabric
i looked at the flooring stuff, its a bit too thin for me. i also saw the dynamat type stuff but didnt want to pay $110 for a huge roll when i would never use it all.
