Help me decide on intake
Okay, I need help on this. I am getting a ported cylinder head installed with header. Everything else is stock for intake and exhaust. I have a muffler and that's it. So my question is whether I should stick with the stock intake, or get an aftermarket one like the volant cool air. I figure more air going to the engine will give more power, but at the cost of being noisy. Also without an exhaust, I don't know how much it will really help. Or should I just stay stock.
I need to decide soon because I can only afford to tune the car once--and it has to be tuned shortly after the head install. Thanks for your help

Well, you can only blow out what you can suck in.... so in theory, the intake should come before the exhaust... what it will do for you, who knows.
I'm assuming with the bigger ports, the engine would just love to breathe deeply, so you might as well let it.
If you feel like playing with it a little, move the battery out to give yourself some room, then park an open element (K&N type) filter where the battery was, Get a custom pipe bent (for just testing it, an exhaust shop would do the trick, ultimately, you'll probably want mandrel bent aluminum or molded plastic, but go cheap to prototype it.) Then just let it sit there and suck air.... its in front of the engine block, so any of the heat from the engine is behind it, and with the battery out of the way you can pull the tray and its got lots of room from down below to draw air from in the fender well, even though the filter isn't down there, the air will blow up.
The Injen did work.... but it didn't really fit in the car very well, as a result, the car gashed up the pipe pretty bad since it rubbed everything, and ultimately wore a hole in the pipe.
You're really just going to have to tune it with something, a dyno, a Gtech or RSM, your *** if its sensitive enough, and just see what makes the car work best.

Thanks for the comments. I need something less restrictive. The K&N is good, but the filter is out in the open. Volant has a boxed filter. I'm staying away from AEM and Ingen and all the other metal intakes. I had an AEM SRI and that thing was terrible for low end. I think the Volant will keep some low end because of the box, and the tubing is smaller than other intakes as well.
Boilermaker1, what did you notice with the intake you made from that box and the ingen? Did the box help at all instead of being open?

Yeah, the new one helps the low end... but let me go see if it matters if the filter is open or boxed, I'll test it... It may just be the straight track helping me out.
i personally don't think intakes help much for power anyways...but its all about how well they are made so they don't go bad. in this case, aem is the choice, and the v2 is the best from aem

Yeah, it's between stock, fipk, and volant. I might stay with stock first and see what happens. Alot of R&D went into the volant, though.

V2 is worth the money, i'm telling you. But i've noticed a good gain because i already have HP header, hi flo cat, 2.25" stainless steel piping, and straight through exhaust. You'll notice a good gain if you have header and exhaust done, but if you're stock everything, it may be too much air for the car to take in. In order for the car to suck in all that air, it's gotta be able to exhale well through the exhaust.

^ Do you have the volant? Or are you just going by hype? You know, like the KMS Intake Manifold and the DH Pulley. And the Gude package. And the AEM V2.

well i mean if gearbox is getting the fipk from another user then awesome for the discount. although if you are going to pay that price this thing looks way better made.
of course i dont beleive the horsepower and tourque hype, but the acctual design and materials are awesome! plus they both cost the same.
i acctually think that these are going to be the toss up.
Volant Cool Air Intake Systems are revolutionizing the way a true COLD air intake should be manufactured. Volant engineers each vehicle application to give the customer a quality intake that fits and installs like OEM. Volant modifies the air intake duct and filter box by reducing intake restrictions, rerouting and increasing the diameter of the new air duct without removing any OEM sensors from the vehicle. All Volant intakes systems are molded with a high-grade X-Link polyethylene material to insulate the air box from conducting as much heat as would metal. These kits are designed to deliver a dramatically increased volume of air. Volant air intake systems increase performance up to 18 horsepower and 40 pounds of torque! Some customers increased their gas mileage by 1 to 2 miles per gallon.
Includes Hi-Flow Velocity Air Box!
Volant's Cool-Air kits, with their Hi-Flow Velocity Air Boxes are designed to pull cold air from outside the engine compartment to shield the new high performance reusable cotton gauze filter from the engines heat. Leaving an exposed filter in the engine compartment draws the heat from the engine, meaning the hotter it gets the less oxygen there is, it makes your engine work that much harder to breath. Usually, much larger than stock, the boxes are designed to deliver a dramatically increased volume of air.
Features:
Cool Air Box Only Pulls In Cool Outside Air!
Made From Heavy Duty Ethelyn Plastic!
Molded To Exact Specifications For A Superb Fit!
Designed to deliver a dramatically increased volume of air!
Gains up to 18 horsepower and 40 pounds of torque!

True. If the volant turns out to be better, I'll just sell the fipk and get one. Only reason I'm not getting it yet is the inlet for volant is directly above the auto tranny (which gets hot). Fipk is higher up and has a heat shield.

FIPK II is made very well. It fits perfectly out of the box. Why do you say Volant is made better? Cuz it's bigger?

the materials design that was used to make it..that is some pretty inovative stuff...
and i never said that the fipk2 was a shitty intake it has proven good gain though rd.
i would love to have one but imo for that price the volant would be my choice. the volant is also a true cai. the fipk is sri<<<<a very well made one too
also if i was going to get one for cheaper i would go for the cheaper one
but if i was going to decide... well 250$ is way to much for better gas milage anyways. unless like in this case he has bigger ports and needs more air to get through. i'll prolly just wait for some one to resale thiers on ebay.

I know Fipk II is without question the best intake for our cars. In reference to the new
Volant has anybody actually run the Volant in their civic? I don't believe anything until
I see some other vic owners making comments about a product they actually have driven with! I don't believe the manufacturers dyno! They are out to make $$ from us.
Many aftermarket parts are scams, ya'll already know this. So, HAS ANYBODY INSTALLED AND DROVE WITH THE VOLANT AIR INTAKE? I am interested in it, but not until somebody tries it out. Be safe everyone.

Volant comes out in two weeks. It has been developed for the past 2-3 years and is just now getting out of R&D. I agree it's an innovative intake and has a better grade of plastic that won't get hot. Also the filter is completely enclosed, which is better for low-end and keeping hot air out. I guess we'll see what happens in the coming month.
Oh and I got my K&N coming on Monday, so I'll keep you updated. I'm hoping it will really shine with the port work.
