Checking oil, trans fluid
Checking oil, trans fluid
I have an '02 Civic LX. Here is a basic question which I am sure someone will be able to answer:
1. Do you need to let the engine come to normal operating temperature before checking the engine oil level? Also, is it the same procedure while checking transmission fluid?
2. How many of you use Honda motor oil and transmission fluid? Is it better than other comparable products available?
Advice would be greatly aprpeciated!
Thanks,
btwracing

The engine oil reading I thought was supposed to be taken when the engine is cold. Tranny oil should be checked right when the car is turned off. For type of oil, pretty much anything that's 5w20 for best mileage. Tranny oil I would stick with Honda brand.

that's what I was taught as well. I have heard that you cannot get an accurate reading when your engine has not been cold because some of the oil will be flowing elsewhere (therefore, the true oil level is not measured accurately). I would say cold....but prove me wrong and I will stand corrected.
No opinion on Trans fluid.

how much did they put into your engine with new oil filter?
my local wal-mart poured 4 quarts with a new fram oil filter..
anyway, i filled 0w20 and...i noticed better performance from my car...
-quiter engine on high rpm at lower gear..
-more stable response while acceleration...
-quiter engine noise while running fast on highway....(>60mph)
-more stable/better response while launching from idle....
-faster throttle response....*froom frooooom*
uhm....i think that's because i jumped from unknown bulk oil (damn toyota dealer) to M1 0W20...
-faster warming time....that is, the amount of time for the temperature needle to jump up..

im doing my tranny oil soon..... i got that annyoing clicking 2nd gear
and my boy changed to redline and it went away
i hoping to get the same results. there is a big misconception about oem parts like tranny oil and such. yes honda has "oem genuine" oil, but they dont manufacture it. they get it to an oem supplier like pennzoil or castro or whoever, same way how bosch is bmw's oem supplier for spark plugs and rotors and how ngk is honda's oem spark plug manufacturer. dont be afraid to use non oem tranny oil, how many of us use "genuine honda" oil. a good friend of mine that use to work as a service tech had to explain this to me. plus, honda cant void your warranty as long as you use the proper viscosity and have the fluid changed properly.
