**UPDATED** DIY black housing (pics)
I masked off and painted the housing, leaving the parking and turn signals chrome. I also put the clear reflector back in over the lower part of the light, over the black paint and I am not putting in the amber reflector cover. It looks really good - I will post pics of the finished product tomorrow... 3 hours on these damn things at 1am is too much for 1 day.

i want to do the same DIY, but one thing i don't get is the MASKING. So i just put tape over the place i don't want it in blk? won't the tape get the chrome off? You think you can take some pic of the second headlight with tape on it?

this is to help yoyoio... I took the hard edge of the masking tape (rather than the torn part then cutting with a razor) and carefully laid an edge around the insides of the lip i wanted chrome. it takes forever, but if you look, you can see the edge i made is pretty damn clean.
and for who had asked... its just flat black spray paint - but i used a plastic primer first to get the paint to adhere without having to sand the chrome.

i taped/masked off the reflectors and stuck them back on the headlights because i like the chrome behind the reflector because the orange looks brighter... check out topfuel's car, i did it exactly like him... imo i think it looks better....

you have 2 options... sand like mentioned above, or use plastic primer like i did. im not sure of the adhesion of the primer yet... i haven't reassembled the housing yet. it should hold for what we're using it for... aka... something that once its together is never touched again.
i can write a very good DIY... but i didn't take pics up until the painting phase.... unless someone sends me their lights to do for them...
