Shifting in a/t
Shifting in a/t
I got an auto transmission, and sometimes, i like to shift from
1-->2--->D3--->D4. Is this bad, or is this hurting the transmission
or anything. Just wondering if i need to stop doing it or not.

if you want a high top speed over 100..just keep it in 3rd until the electronic govenor kicks in
for the 02 civic 4 speed auto thats 120mph.
Like to warn you anything over 100+ is jail time

I drive an auto becuase I have to commute so freaking far in LA traffic to school
.autos are good from a roll, but deffently not from a start on imports. Domestics with torque makes no differnce really...
Autos will always be slower exceptions are those rare performance cars with special auto transmissions.
example the MB SLR Mclaren and the vette performance rear axle 5 speed auto.
anyways rock on!!! they are electronic limited in rpm so wont wreck your engine either unless you downshift to like 2nd on a freeway!
Haha, thats funny. I tend to do the same thing with my a/t. I go from D3-2-D3-D4 sometimes, not when im trying to race. I wish I had a m/t, but unfortunately I don't have the money. But anyways, usually when I am racing, I like to start out in D3. I notice that when you get into D3 high RPMS, my civic accelerates faster and when I get too high then I just shift it back into D4.
hmmmm, that'd be good to know. i've been using "2" when i make this left turn on my way home. if i make it without "shifting," my car stays in 3rd or 4th going less than 25 and it takes a loooong time before realizing it needs to downshift.......so that's why i've just been doing it myself :/

Within a week of driving a Toyota Echo rental car I completely fawked up the tranny doing stuff like this. I drive a 5spd and dont' feel right not shifting so I shifted it, it's a rental. By the end of the week when I would let it drive itself the tranny wasn't happy and shifted like hell. Needless to say I wouldn't reccomend driving this way in your personal car.

i dont think it hurts it, more wears it out then anything.
nor is downshifting in an auto as long as u dont change into a gear that over revs.
plenty of needs for a downshift in an auto as its so slow sometimes.. when you're going onto a sudden hill, a turn.. etc. etc. *shrug* some old ones takes forever. u smash the pedal and a couple of seconds later then it changes gear and u feel like an ***.

I have yet to find a use for D3, other than shifting in & out of while I'm driving. They say it's so you can limit yourself to the top 3 gears while driving in the city, but who the hell does that? If I'm on the highway doing like 60 and I want to pass somebody, I'll drop it into D3 and get the extra boost from the higher RPM's.
The other use I have, since I live in a town where there's snow 8 months out of the year, it's a great way to slow your car down without braking and sliding on ice. Drop it from D to D3, or D3 to 2 and the engine brake slows the car down for you in a hurry, and without losing a lot of traction.
I've heard conflicting arguments on the subject, and my thoughts are as long as you're not neutral dropping (if you don't know, look it up) then it shouldn't be too bad - as long as you're not driving like a dumbass, ie drop to 2 going 80 miles an hour. That probably isn't good for your engine, and I imagine afterwards you'll have to go back and pick your transmission up off the road ...
I guess I just don't see how it can be ALL that different (obviously it's not the same in many ways) from shifting in a manual. You're just forcing the computer to put the car into a higher gear.
