UPDATE!! 12" JL Audio sub question
[stupid question] How can I tell what model sub this is? I just bought it from a guy locally and he didnt know, BUT it was a good price so I got it anyways. I looked on the sub itself and could not find what model it was, just said JL Audio. Im trying to figure out what kind of amp I should hook it up to...[/end stupid question]
Thanks
Thanks

I just looked into it more. It is definatly either a W0 or W3. Not any higher including the W3v2. The W3v2 does not have the round part in the middle that sticks out slightly. If you get what I'm saying.
They do not not make 12" W3's any more. So if it is a newer sub than it is the W0. The 12" W0 is 125 watts RMS.
**EDIT **My bad I just checked some more and notice that the W6AE has the round part in the middle with the logo. That sub is 300 watts.
Dunno how else I could help besides you looking on the sub some more and see if there is anything anywhere that could help.

THanks, i believe it is an older sub (maybe 1-2 years old). I picked up it up locally with the box for $40, so I figured I couldnt go wrong.
What would be a suggested amp/amp rating etc. that would work well with this sub? Im an audio noobie so thanks for the help.
Im running a pioneer deh6400 headunit if that means anything.

i want to say W0, how many voice coils? i mean, on the back, on the basket of the woofer, how many locations are there for speakers to connect to? if you have terminals on just one side, and not the other, i would have to say that its a W0, i dont think the W3 came in single voice coil.

w3 never came in 3 ohm. w3 exists in dual 2, dual 4, and dual 6
you guys also ruled out really old jl models, so altogether theres teh the ib12, 12w0. the 12w1, 12w3, the 12w4, and the 12w5, and 12w6
its in a box, so im doubting 12ib4
diff cone, so not a 12w3v2
single voice coil, so not a 12w3, 12w5, or 12w6
w0 comes in 4, 8, and 12 ohm models and is rated for 125 watts

w1 came in single 4 and single 8 ohm, rated for 125 watts as well

w2 came in a 4 ohm model too, but i couldnt find a picture of it
w4 came in a 4 ohm, and dual 4 ohm, so stick to 4 ohm, and is rated for 200 watts

basically, what can we do with this info:
1 - we can say that regardless of teh sub, it can handle at MOST, 200 watts, so youre looking at a 150 watt amp
2 - we need to know how many ohms it rus at, which is easily done with a digital multimeter, 20 bucks at radio shack
3 - we dont need to figure box since you already have one
4 - regardless of what it is, its either really old, or its jl's bottom of the line

It's most likely a W4, they have a label on the magnet like that with nothing but "JL Audio" and they have a slightly smaller dustcap, which it appears your sub does from the picture. Another telltale sign that it is older, is that the part where the screws go in is a type of fiberboard, all the newer JL products have a rubber ring there in place of the fiberboard.

Yes I do believe its older. Like I said, picked it for $40. Seems like a good, cheap sub for adding some base into my trunk. It will be upgraded eventually so its not a huge concern.
I would like to go ahead and buy a good amp now, so i dont have to buy another one later on.
Will I blow my sub if i run more than a 200watt amp to it?

oooohhhhh W4's were really great subs, i wish that they still made them.
No u will not blow them with more than 200 watts, just as long as u don't crank up the gain on the amp, be smart about it.

Im taking it to a shop tomorrow or thursday to get the importence or whatever tested and take a look at amps.
In the end, I will have a decent system and hopefully some more knowledge on audio. Thanks.
