Smooth Shifting....

Ive been driving mah civic for about.. 6000 miles now.. and when i drive it.. seems really smooth while shifting... but when i look at the person in the pasenger seat... i see emm jurk forward everytime i hit the clutch...

its sorta like ur being pushed back cus im accelerating... but then when i hit the cluch.. the "push back" feeling is GONE and juss jurks you forward...

Is there ne way at all to make that go away and seem a lil more smooth like an automatic???

Yeah, just release the clutch a little slower. All MT cars will be like that, especially the SMG cars.

feather the clutch when you release it.. that'll fix that problem.

the deal is, there is only so much you can do.. you'll be burning our ur clutch if you do it excessively...

not hitting the gas immediately or softly will help a bit too.

its very tiring to drive so that people dont feel that you're shifting.

I'm glad I dont have any friends to drive around.

Yes the neck snapping torque our engines produce is insane! LOL just kidding.. but yeah I know what you mean. Its like my head doesnt snap back like the passenger does. I think its cuz my feet are aways holding me planted to the back of my seat. Dunno..

Don't forgot the fact that the driver is holding/pushing against the steering wheel, probably the biggest reason drivers don't feel shift jerks. Just tell your passenger to push against the top of the glove box lol

LOL... okay, the reason why YOU dont feel the jerk and the PASSENGER does is because you know exactly when you're shifting and accelerating..and braking. you body automatically prepares yourself for the jerk. the passenger on the other hand doesn't have a clue when you shift/accelerate/brake so their body can't prepare for the sudden jerk. this is true even for an automatic, cuz my brother neck is hella jerkin' back and forth, lol. im pretty sure this is the main reason.

the head jerking forward happens because your rate of acceleration drops down too quickly... (acceleration is terminated when the clutch is pressed)

try this... when upshifting, slowly ease off the gas before pushing the clutch

do this instead of just releasing the gas quickly and pressing the clutch right away... (normal shifting)

then put it into gear, then slowly release the clutch while simutaniously slowly giving it gas...

i hope this makes sense

this will eliminate the head jerking forward because your rate of acceleration is dropping slowly using the gas pedal (theres also no acceleration when your not pressing on the gas)

this does get you tired quickly though... i do the smooth shifting when i have passengers but when i'm alone i could careless...

Unless you're on a date ...who cares if the passenger flies around while you are driving...I think it's funny to jerk my friend around while shifting. But when we drive his mom's Trans Am...he get's his payback on me.

Yeah, Unless i'm driving with my parents or other adults... I just haul *** and don't really give a ****, the subtle jerk between gears is the least of their worries...

I've been driving a stick for about 5 years now and everybody that rides with me has to actually see me shift to feel it. Several people though I had an automatic until they asked to drive my car. Now when I get on it though, expect to have your head jerked at least a little from the massive tq. #'s

Thats exactly what I do. Thats the best advice right there. I drive extra smooth when other people are in the car to be nice. I dont want to make anyone sick.
