cold water on hot brake disc

today when i got back home..
i just rinsed my car..
but when i watered on my tire and wheel
there was a smoke..not a smoke but vaporation i think..
i think it happened cuz hot disc met cold water..
i heard its not good to rinse hot disc with cold water but i just forgot at that time..
does it do any harm? like changing shape of disc or something?
just curious..i dont think its really harmful cuz we get rain anytime..

Not good. Can cause warpage. The stream cools the disk unevenly. But hey... I have driven my car to a carwash and sprayed it down..so most of us have done it.

it probably didn't do anything, just try not to do it again. Let the car cool off first, even if it's for a little while.

yeah most of us have probably done it..

and u gotta account for the rain factor too..

if you do it where there's actually vapor coming off...

just dont do it constantly..

if it was hot enough, and the water was cool enough.. it'll warp, but I think u're in the clear... I'm sure they have some tolerance to it.. or else how can it handle braking in the rain?

Getting a little water on them is fine, the REAL way to warp your rotors is to overheat your brakes. I went down highway 1, at a "
slightly" illegal speed, and all those 60-20 mph stops really warped my rotors... Took it into honda said "My rotors are warped" they're like OK, we'll resurface them for free.

lol thats kinda nice of them to do it for free..

resurfacing doesn' cost much.. but they would usually charge a buttload labor fee.

yeah a lot of those high speed stop will really eat away ur rotor.

Well it was "under warrenty"

Yeah, I really only noticed the warpage when braking at like 70+ MPH, it would make the steering wheel wiggle.

T_T;; ... I think my front left rotor is warped ... I drove through some water ... not even a puddle or anything. Anyway, now it seems like my rotor squeals when I reach about 2800+ rpms ... VERY annoying ... I just got a brake job done 2000 miles ago too

The whole front end of the car shakes and shudders when you are braking. It starts off subtlely but eventually gets very very shaky. You will actually wear out your pads faster with warped or grooved rotors so it's always good to keep an eye on your rotors. It's just your brakes keeping you out from under that semi you know.

Your rotor squeeling shouldn't have anythign to do with the RPM of your engine because that changes with what gear your in. Are you saying that your brake rotor makes noise if you rev your engine in neutral without moving?

Or are you saying... that when you're moving and not braking your rotor is making noise... or

are you saying that when you're braking your rotor makes noise....

if one of your rotors is messed up and the other is fine, it will pull toward the fine side when you brake, otherwise it's probably not your brakes.... the other thing is that the brakes might not be adjusted properly and could be dragging on your brake rotor...

have it checked out by the dealership and see what they say, especially if it's still under warrenty.

Discs are meant to have a tolerance to water, I wouldn't worry about it at all. I had rims on a older car that totally exposed my discs to the elements. Just don't make a everyday thing. I just replied to your ebrake thread, if those were disc breaks in the rear I'd worry about warping.

Haha I have family in the same town as you!
