Driving in D3 for 1hour
yeah so my sister drove my car and drove for an hour in D3 (automatic) on the highway
... and now my car is all fuqed up. there is a loud hum from the engine when i get up >50mph, and the tach needle stays up around 4000 when i'm only going like 60mph and veery slowly goes down when i release the gas. what kind of prob is this?
my car is 4dr lx 2001 with 64k miles.

Well every gear has its limitations. I am not sure what the mph ranges for each gear are, but i've gotten to 60+ mph in 3rd gear. The only thing about driving on the freeway in 3rd gear is that it is alot less efficient mileage wise. Your turning more RPMS while on the freeway in 3rd gear so you burn up alot more gas. I have an EX though, so the trannys on our civics are probably different. I know driving in D3 in my civic on the freeway won't do anything, even if I drive in that gear for an hour or two,but again, you have a differnt type of civic.

ah.
are you still in 3rd gear? heh. if you're in 4th gear and its 60 mph it shouldn't be at 4,000....
there's nothing wrongwith using 3rd gear on highway... just depends on how fast she was going...
if she's driving around 70-80 mph for an hour.. she was probably taxing the engine heavily... cuz at 3rd gear for an lx.. that's constantly over 5,000+ rpm (someone confirm this, I dont remember gear ratio for an auto lx, I know its longer... so...)
she was probably just making the engine work harder needlessly, and wasting gas.. shouldn't have done anything...
UNLESS, she was driving at a very high speed (80+).. and forcing the engine to constantly hit redline... cuz 3rd gear can reach what in an auto LX? my ex hits 83-85 mph... so...
I'm hoping she was driving at a low speed...
but if she was taking it easy and going at 60-70.. the car still should be fine.. just wasted gas and extra stress on the engine...
it should be able to handle that though...
you need to come back with more info.. on how she was driving it.

Why don't you give it a couple days?
It could be just psychological...anything might sound like a problem to you at the moment since your really worried?
I also have an 2001 4dr auto LX. I can tell you that the speed governor kicks in 3rd gear before you redline and damage your engine.
I've gone to the ~117mph speed limit of the car on 3rd gear without any problems other than gas mileage drop.
If the highway had some hills to go up on you might have stressed the engine? On some highways I can't even get past 80mph without constant flooring.

driving on d3 for an hour for 60mph shouldn't cost any problem...yea, check it out for the next few days, maybe you won't notice it later.
i have been driving 80mph on D3 for an hour or two everyday during the summer for commuting, and its working fine. i might get a tranny cooler later tho., just in case, but 60mph is definitely no problem.

Our ECU's are designed to "learn" the way we drive, so your ECU could have decided when you're in that gear to behave differently, so resetting your ecu could solve the problem, But if you car is under warrenty just take it in and show them what's wrong with it.

My car made it from Nevada to Illinois, and there are alot of hills to drive over. This was a fully loaded car plus three people. My point is...the car should be able to handle a little stress.

ok well here is an update.... took it to a mechanic (family friend, so no ripoff), he said the transmission bearings are gone/bad/?. so he said i have to replace them or have honda look at them. called up honda and they said i'll have to buy a whole new transmission costing 3500 - 4500. SO, i think i'll just have the transmission repaired and sell my civic before i get any more problems.

so ? what does that mean? absollllllllllllutely nothing. just cause ur in a gear for a long time and its not 5th doesnt mean crap... even if you were revin at 5900rpms.. still doesnt mean ne thing. i rarely shift to 5th. theres no reason.. are cars are too slow in that gear.. and gas mileage is great either way?

Isn't not good to drive at constant high RPM's ? ...Like around 4500-5500 rpm in 4th gear.. I think you should definetly shift to 5th, at least on the highways...

In my HX 4500 RPMS is 90mph in 4th...
ANYWAY, driving wiht your engine in the higher revs does wear it out faster, but not considerably, granted, don't go down the freeway racking out 5k rpms in 2nd for 2 hours, that's just stupid, you have the gears so why not use them?

are cars SIP gas
if i burn alil extra then normal.. wtf is the difference.. so i get 29miles to the gallon.. nott 34 .. woooooah .. thats alot of money
Yeah seriously our cars are so great on gas. I do notice when I drive hard and floor it a bunch of times and hit the brakes, and floor it, it does eat more gas up especially with my intake. I get about 22 mpg when I drive harder. On the Parkways cruising at a steady speed of 80 i'll get around 32 mpg.

found a whole 2002 civic engine/tranny for $300 on ebay... think its worth getting? would it be cheaper to buy this and use the tranny and engine (it has 16k miles, mine has 63k miles) or would it be cheaper to fix up my broken tranny? someone told me it'll be several hundred to rebuild and fix it.
here's the ebay linkhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33615
