Unhappy Inconsistent Temperature

Hi All, i have bought an EXI at the start of the year and everything was going on well
until recently, readings on the temperature is getting veryn inconsistent. In a traffic Jam, the temperature will shoot up to HOT and i can feel that the engine will get very rough and
noisy. However, when the car starts moving consistently for a while, everything will resume back to normal.

When driving in the rain, there is also 1 incident that the meter goes all the way down to Cold, which should not be happening...i sent the car to my workshop to check, they have
changed my radiator fan and also taken out a thermostart (to be used in cold countries) but
the problem still persists.....anyone facing this problem before or any ideas whats happening to me car??

Do your fans turn on automatically like they should? If your in warm climate, you can just start your car, warm it up and then park with the engine running. Eventually the fans will start.

If I'm correct, the fans are told to turn on from the ECU once it reaches a certain temp. That temp is determined by the CTS(coolant temp sensor). So maybe check that out or just replace it. If your CTS is defective it'll tell the ECU to do all kinds of weird things.

It doesnt sound like its your waterpump or blown headgasket, but its possible. I have a temp gun that I use to tell the difference between the upper and lower radiator hoses. When the engine gets real hot, I shoot the gun on the hoses. If I dont see a temp diffference, its either a clogged radiator/coolant system or waterpump. I dont know if you can reach the hoses, but if you can touch them(becareful) you can do the same thing if you dont have a temp gun.

Could be your temp gauge.. doubtful but ya never know.

BTW, changing the thermostat to a colder one can cause problems as well. The ECU has been programmed to do certain things at certain temps, if those temps are never established your car wont run right. I'd go back to a stock thermostat at the next oppertunity you have.

Nope, the fan does not turn on automatically. Even when the temperature rises high, it still does not turn on. Thought that this may be the problem, had the fan changed to a new one but the problem still persists.....

Think that it may be the problem. Any advise on how to test the functionality of this sensor? In addition, where is this sensor located?

I think what he did was to take the whole thermostat out rather then changing it to a colder one....anyway, whenever i goes up to speed of 110km/h or higher, there is a very distinctive ringing sound that comes out..is it a sign that something is not going right??

If its not the fan, then I'd have to guess its some other electrical related part. My Helms manual says start off by checking out these fuses:

Fuse number 4(20 amp) in the under-hood fuse/relay box, and number 14(10 amp) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box. It goes on to read about how to troubelshoot these items that are related to the radiator fan circuit. You really should think about getting a copy of the manual. Best 100 bucks I've spent on my Civic. It talks about the fan relay, fan switch, ETC among other things.

The ECT is located on the left side of the cylinder head if your facing the engine bay. Hard to describe without having a pic. But its screwed in behind the upper radiator hose, under the intake resonator. When rplacing it torque to 8.7 lbfft.

Eeew.. I wouldnt do that. There are alot of temperature related codes and signals that the ECU needs from various sensors that are directly affected by engine temp. I'd suggest that you test the thermostat and make sure it opens up, then re-install it. Then, worst case wire up the fans to a manual switch that you can turn on when the temp gets hot until you figure out the problem. Just turn on the switch right before the temp gauge reaches half way.
