7th gen civic representing in CAR AND DRIVER Mag
You guys should pick this issue of CAR and DRIVER up, its really worth it. The latest issue contains many souped up imports, which includes a 7thgen civic. In the 4 cylinder FWD comparison test, the 7thgen came in 2nd place. Also, here's a list of cars they tested:
2001 AEM/Hasport honda civic ex type-S
2003 Cobb tuning Subaru Impreza WRX
2001 Comptech USA honda S2000
2002 DC sports Acura RSX type S
2002 Flyin' miata Mazda MX-5 Miata
2002 HKS USA Acura RSX type s
2003 Howell Automotive Dodge Neon 2700
2002 Hytech Ehause Systems.Progress Group Acura RSY Type-S
2003 Jackson racing Fort SVT Focus
2002 Jackson Racing/ Hasport Honda Civic SI

2002 Mini Madness Mini Cooper S
2000 Neuspeed Volkswagen GTI

2003 Vortech Engineering Ford SVT
Again the 7th gen civic came in 2nd place in the 4 cylinder FWD, only to be bested by the 2002 HKS USA Acura RSX type s.
Here's the total rankings of the 4Cylinder FWD:
10th: 2003 Jackson racing Fort SVT Focus
9th: 2000 Neuspeed Volkswagen GTI

3rd: 2002 Mini Madness Mini Cooper S
2nd: 2001 AEM/Hasport honda civic ex type-S
1st: 2002 HKS USA Acura RSX type s
They did the rankings on several aspects, not only speed. Here's the specs of the 7thgen:
1/4 time: 14.3 seconds @99mph
Road course time: 70.8 Sec
130 to 0 -mph braking: 549 feel
Price as tested: $38, 322

Its a Black sedan
Turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16-valve 4-in-line
AEM plug & play engine conroller with port guel injection
The results of the 4 cylinder Rear or 4WD came in like this:

3rd: 2003 Cobb tuning Subaru Impreza WRX
2nd: 2003 Rhys Millen Racing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
1st: 2001 Comptech USA honda S2000
All these cars seem to be heavily modified. Sorry for the lack of details guys, i didnt really get a chance to read the whole thing. Its just nice to see a 7thgen being represended!

AEM claims an output of 349 HP and 239 pound-feet of torque, but only ran a 14.3?
is that right shouldnt that be running like 13's?
im not a guru on thats stuff, but i thought it would be faster then that on the 1/4

Re: 7th gen civic representing in CAR AND DRIVER Mag
I like the part at the end where the Z06 Corvette is faster than all the cars tested...
I understand that the front drive cars won't have the best ETs in the world, but a car with power should make some decent MPH in the 1/4... Also, since the HP is "tuner's estimate" in these cars, I think a lot of the tuners are exaggerating their hp numbers. Note: Not all, some of the tuners seem to be spot on or a little conservative, but when a car with 265hp can't break 100 in the quarter mile (especially as light as a lot of these cars are), somethings not right.
To me , the GTi with a claimed HP of 265 only hits 95 in the quarter... I'd guess the HP is lower...
All in all, a neat article. I especially like the S2000 winning.

It costs just under 16k to buy an EX these days. Minus 38k, that's 22k worth of mods and they ran 14 seconds? That has to be a typo man. My corvette is bone stock, dynos around 265 horses and 275 lbs torque and runs 12.9 1/4 mile with stickys. 22k would get you a stage 3 from KMS and a turbo, which would probably put you around 260 horses on the dyno if you have no other mods. It also weighs less than the Vette. That's just messed up. You know how magazines are when it comes to 1/4 mile times.
This may help you guys understsand better.
The $38K price tag is what it would cost to take a new Civic and build it like the one we have and paying a shop to do it. As for our Civic I probably have a toral of $11-12k in it. If I had to build another one and pay for all the parts, I could probably could do it for around the cost of a new RSX. The comparison to the Vette is unfair since it was the only car that was allowed to run R compound tires. If all the other cars would have been allowed to run R compound tires several of the cars may have smoked the Vette.
Chevy is a big advertiser in Car and Driver.
As for the seeming lack of acceleration it can be attributed to the way the cars were setup and the tire selection. Our car, and the others, were set up for a road course, i.e. lots of camber. This means less rubber on the ground for acceleration. And that brings up the subject of rubber, we were restricted to a 140 tread wear rating. No R compound tires. Ouch.
Next year I plan on kicking everyone's *** and taking 1st and 2nd in the front drive class.

Suprisingly the Neon has a long history in racing. Road racing that is.
the Neon ACR was designed for it (The ACR stood for American Club Racer). Look it up some time. They have a strong presence in autocross too.

Boilermaker I wanted to say that your avatar is dope. Refreshing change from all those simpsons avatars.
Anyways, yeah, Car and Driver's a bit biased towards American cars, not half as bad as Motor Trend though.
Wowoo, Honda #1! That's a great article.

The fastest 4banger they tested was the Comptech S/C S2000 ($68,386)... which the Z06 ($56,720) ran 1.3 sec. quicker through the course. The fastest front drive was the HKS RSX ($44,790) which got pounded by a full 10 seconds. And on the 2 minute course they ran... that is a lot.

with the right tires, Corvettes are monsters on a road course.
In autocross, goin from My Street tires to My race tires saves me about 1 sec. thats it.

Uh, where does it say that the Vette had R compound tires? Did I miss something in my eagerness to find out who won?

Heres a fine example of Cornering Speeds Vs Straight Speeds
2001 Z06 Vs S2000 (Both cars running R compound tires, and running about 1:46.1 at Lagua Seca).
S2000 Vs Z06
Warning its 7megs and about 1:46 min Long.
thanks http://www.speedventures.net/
You can clearly see that the Z06 can catch the S2000 in the sraight aways, but the S2000 Pull away from the Z06 in the corners. each car has its own strengths, and both are very evenly matched, its up to the driver to use his/her cars strengths to win.

Because Car and Driver did. Thats the whole point of this discussion. Stock... a vette still topped these shop tuned up 4 bangers. Thats why we're comparing them. A 350 HP S2000 (which weighs what? 2700 lbs?) and a Corvette 405 HP and 3100 lbs... should be a pretty fair fight... what it ultimately boiled down to is the fact that a Z06 still stomps a 1/4 mile (its high 12s)... which is what the start of the track was... Comptech's S2K ran a very respectable 13.3... I thought it would have been faster but they did say it was hot.... but that still means the Z06 made up another 1/2 sec + in the corners.
