Why are aftermarket parts illegal?
why are so many things for our cars or cars in general like turbos or HIDs as an aftermarket part illegal, unless it is factory standard then everything is legal? then it doesn't matter what your tint is, what your headlights are, or what is under the hood. i dont get it
Not ALL aftermarket parts are illegal. Just the fun ones...neons, strobes, cat-less exhaust systems, stuff like that. HID's are legal, look at BMW's, they have it stock. Turbo's are legal, WRX STi ... stock... AUDI ...turbo stock. See, just some stuff is illegal. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm pretty sure of what I said, that and every state is different, as is every country, like Canada requires DRL's, U.S. doesn't.

HID is illegal...catz even says it on the packaging and on the site..unless your car comes standard with DOT/SAE approved HID illumination system...its illegal. turbo is perfectly fine as long as you can still pass your smog.

Some items are illegal due to Federal laws (we're from the government and we're here to help you
) like the HID kits that we've been talking about on another thread. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration oversees laws that are supposed to keep vehicle operators from hurting themselves or others. Also air pollution laws on the Federal level require you to have catalytic converters, etc....
Others are state laws, like the CARB part numbers that California requires on aftermarket parts. Manufacturers have to test their products & prove to the state of Cali that their part does not affect air pollution output on your car. If the manufacturer doesn't want to go to the expense of testing their parts, they stamp it "Illegal for use on California Highways"
Some states have window tint laws and others leave it up to local cities. Same with enforcement of headlight & noise/muffler ordinances
There are a lot more LEGAL aftermarket parts if you live outside California unfortunately, due to the CARB requirements (but you're getting cleaner air arent you
)

Yea having HIDs on a car that didn't orginally come with them is illegal. For what ive heard cars like BMW's and S2000's have an auto leveling system to keep from blinding oncomming traffic (thats why the color changes from blue to purple).
