SPECS-click here
OVERVIEW-click here
I am thinking about trading in my civic for this car due to the fact i am fixing to have a child and looking for something more roomy but still sleek and somewhat stylish and fast. I am really starting to like this car after reading everything about them. I test drive one tomorrow and i will let you all know how it drives.
Let me know if you have any other ideas for cars i would be interested in.
Oh Ya also forgot to mention a local dealership here is selling them for $17,990.

Sounds like a good deal. I read up a little bit on what I could find, and it sounds like a really good car. Some people are saying it's underpowered, and would benefit better with a better transmission. But those are long-term projects. Other than that, I think it'd be much faster than the civic, and it'll handle better, too. Have fun if you decide to get it!
Titanium Metallic. You got a problem with that?

I think its a good idea with what they did. Kinda glad to see theyre trying to do something new besides a new RX car. Looks decent, lots of add ons help it out. Turbo never a bad thing.

I think its too much of a hodge podge. Come on... The engine's got stock Protege internals, a Protege Turbodiesel intercooler, a little turbo (which makes the car sound like a leaf blower... you hear no engine at all, just whirr), but its got a hell of a suspension. So it's a trade off. You could probably do just as good, if not better with an MP3 and a self turbo job... cuz it seems that to pump a lot through the Mazdaspeed, you've gotta build the engine and scrap the turbo system anyways.
The car just strikes me as something to fill a market hole, not beat the **** out of one.

For under 18K, that sounds like a good car. Don't get that yellow though... it's just... blah. The hp number seems a little week for a turbo, but I'm sure you can bump that up soon. Go for it.

I think they're not a bad alternative. Although I think there are better cars for just a little more money.
And why isn't this thread in the General Auto Ramblings forum?

for the same money you can buy a SRT-4 that is ugly, but very fast,
or you can get a base RSX for about the same as the Mazda.... it is something different though ....

it should have more hp for that. but that is definatly faster than our vics at this point unless you are sprayin or have a turbo. I think you should look into a WRX if you can. Who knows even if the wrx is a few g's more, if you finance it the payments might be the same.

Go for it if you can get it for under msrp. The car is not that fast in straight line, but the handling is amazing. I have it for 2 months and I still love it. I got the spicy orange , you might want to take a loot at the titanium color, which is the most popular color now. You can go check out the forum at www.msprotege.com. Lots of info about this car
^ Agreed. If you do decide to get it. Get it in Titanium Gray Metallic or Laser Blue Mica. It sounds like you did your homework and researched other car possibilities. . . because I can't think of other sedans (besides the SRT-4) that are in your price range. Unless you've already thought about the SE-R or SE-R Spec V (I don't like the front on the 2004 though).

yea, msprotege.com is a great site for info. owners are making VERY nice numbers with relatively few mods.
turbo-back exhausts and upping the boost to ~10psi will really wake up the car.
the handling is first class, its running with the exotics.
its not really a hodpodge of parts at all, the MSP has larger axles, beefier clutch etc. the internals aren't weak and the turbo is well matched to the engine. the MSP is made to be a track car, and you want quick power(ie. T25's quick spool time). 2nd gen DSM's came with non-ballbearing T25's btw.

So a WRX with 227hp isn't good enough for you because you'd have to get the STi's 300, but 170 in a Protege is fine? I don't get it.
