Hey guys

I have read quite a few posts on how to change your brake fluid, and they've been very informative!

But, I'm switching out the rear drums for discs (possibly tomorrow, weather depending).

So, I need to get the old brake fluid out in order to disconnect the brake lines.

I've read that you NEVER want air inside the master cylinder, so I was wondering what I should do?

if I keep the resevoir cap on, can I rely on basic physics (vacuum) to not let the brake fluid squirt out when I disconnect the back brakes?

The brake lines come out in the wheel wells, so it's not that hard of a job as far as running brake lines go. so I might be able to do it relatively quick, and not let out that much fluid?

(yeah right).


can anyone help me out with this?

You should be okay as long as you dont let the master cylinder run dry or get really low.

but how can I disconnect the line with fluid still in the lines?!

won't the fluid spazz out of the line, and then empty from the master cylinder?

I only need to bleed the back two brakes if that helps?

put like some vice grips on the line to pinch the line shut...

I'm a bit scared to pinch them shut, because it may damage the brake line, non?

Sorry for being skeptical! I'm just trying to think this all out before jumping head first into it.

ok, here's what I might try:

1) remove sway bar endlinks
2) remove the 3 bolts holding the control arm on.
3) disconnect the parking brake
4) as fast as possible, unplug the brake lines where they exit the body
5) use something to plug the brake line so that no fluid comes out
6) top up fluid as neccessary
7) plug in new brake line as fast as possible.
8) bolt up the 3 bolts holding the new control arm on
9) connect parking brake
10) connect sway bar linkage


does that sound right?

are there any torque specs for the brake line, or the control arms?

ok...all went well.

I did the rear disc brake swap over the weekend, and had no problems with the brake lines.

what we did, was take the brake line away from the body, turn it upside down, and nothing came out. There isn't enough pressure to break the semi-vacuum caused by the resevoir cap not letting much air in.

worked out great!

and now, I'm riding on disc brakes in the rear!

wow, talk about reviving the dead, hehe
I'll think about making a DIY if I can find any pictures. It's really quite simple.
