Cop encounter at it's worst!!!

I just had the worst encounter of my entire life with a cop today. I live in NH and you are not supposed to do any mods to your car what-so-ever but most of the cops don't care. There is this one cop that is a complete A$$HOLE and litterally harasses people with hooked up cars. He is known throught out my city for this. Anyways, I was drivng down this main road with my girl and I pass by the cop. There is a divider in the middle of the road so you have to make U turns at a turn-arounds set on the sides of the road. After I pass him and he is like 100 yards behind me I see him pull into the turn-around. I know he is coming to get me so I pull into a parking lot. As I pull into the lot I see his lights go on. We sit in the lot and wait. He goes flying by with no lights on and doesn't see me. I sit and wait for a little bit then pull out. When I pull out I see that he is in another turn-around up the road a little ways. I pull off the road onto some back roads because I know he saw me. I'm driving down these roads when all of a sudden he is in front of me. He blows through a stop sign with no lights on makes a third U-turn right in the middle of the road and pulls me over. He writes me two f*cking tickets for lowered car and exhaust. I know this is harassment!!!! Someone help me out with some advice. Thanks guys.

did he write you 2 seperate tickets? you might see some number code on the ticket(s).. something like 21.266:9 or 265.44, could you tell me what those numbers are? I think these tickets are BS.. i've never heard of it being illegal in ANY state to mod a car. I wanna do a little research.

also, how much of a drop do you have? and what kind of exhaust? is it really loud, or is it just because you have an aftermarket exhaust?

nevermind, I found the relevant articles.

TITLE XXI
CHAPTER 266
EQUIPMENT OF VEHICLES

Section 266:9
Height, Length and Width

Height of Motor Vehicle Body and Chassis. – No person shall change the height of, or alter a bumper of, a private passenger vehicle so that the height of any horizontal bumper falls below the minimum distance of 16 inches or above the maximum distance of 20 inches. No person shall change the height of, or alter a bumper of, any vehicle other than a private passenger vehicle so that the height of any horizontal bumper falls below the minimum distance of 16 inches or above the maximum distance of 30 inches. Measurement shall be made from the level ground to the bottom of the bumper with tires inflated to manufacturer's maximum air pressure. If a vehicle is not commonly manufactured with a rear bumper, measurement shall be made to the bottom edge of the chassis frame siderails. No motor vehicle that has been changed or altered so as to exceed the limitations of this section shall be driven on any way without the prior approval of the director. For the purpose of this section, in addition to the definition contained in RSA 259:81, the term "private passenger vehicle'' shall mean a vehicle that has no provision for carrying a load other than a conventional trunk or the cargo area of a station wagon or similar type of vehicle.

now, for the record, the 'horizontal bumper' is the bar behind the bumper attached to the chassis.

is that at least 16" off the ground?

as for the muffler, you're screwed.

TITLE XXI
CHAPTER 266
EQUIPMENT OF VEHICLES

Section 266:59
Muffler; Prevention of Noise

I. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler as defined in RSA 259:66, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a way.
II. The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes, smoke, flame, gas, oil or fuel residue.
III. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in any manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted above that emitted by the original muffler installed in the vehicle and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this section.

glad i dont live where you do! lol. here in CA i think its the center of the headlight has to be 22" from the ground, and i think think its a 94 dB limit? i could be wrong but still atleast we can tamper with the exhuast.

actually i believe in CA your ride cannot be lower than your rim, so if you get a flat or blow out you can still drive it to safety. You are also not allowed to modify your exaust, if your modification creates one db more than stock it is illegal. at least that is how they enforce it in northern cali.

Hey MEX, where did you find those laws??? I'm going to print them up and bring them to court. I just measured to that bumper and it is 17" off the ground. I took a picture of it and I'm bringing that to court too. Thanks

The headlight has to be 22 inches from the ground. Saying that it's lower than your wheel is kinda farfetched.

That exhaust law is bullshit. The law is measured in db. If you'd like to correct me, show me some fine print.

Mex is right on this guys. First off the police officer isnt harrasing you, HE IS DOING HIS JOB, TRYIN MAKE A LIVING JUST LIKE YOU. He coulda put you in jail if he wanted to for fleeing and evading arrest if you really wanna push that but he didnt, he gave you 2 citations(which you knew were illegal in your city, but still added them anyways) the ticket isnt for lowered car its for you bumper not meeting the requirements for bumper height. I dont understand why you would even do these customizations if you knew they are against the law there. but in my eyes you are lucky, you coulda been arrested and you car impounded. just pay the ticket or whatever you wanna do and move on.

Whoa there Injen.

It didn't sound like he was pulled over, nor was he behind him trying to make a stop. The poster just said he knew he was after him because of his modified car and the way he made a U-turn to follow.

Second, did this officer test the db level of your exhaust. Stating that its aftermarket is not sufficient. To my knowledge, the human ear can't measure db levels very accurately. You would need a db meter in order for anything to hold in court.

Finally, it sounds like you should be ok as far as the ride height goes. Some stock cars come lowered, so what is the big deal...as long as its not illegaly lowered.

From my few experiences with the court system, if you bring pictures and a copy of that NH vehicle code, the judge should let you off. Just for that effort you should get at least the ride height waived, not too sure with the exhaust. Most likely he will tell you to fix it.

he pretty much admits above the he was fleeing from the police officer because of his violations, just because an officer doesnt initate his lights doenst mean he isnt chasing you. The poster admits to trying to hide from the police at the time of the incident, therefore in court he would be charged with fleeing if he was charged with that, but he wasnt.

he said he pulled into a parking lot.. most parking lots arent sheilded so u cant see what cars are in there.. the cop was not paying attention.. and if a cop is chasing u he is required to have his lights on

lol ya we are friends. i dont need to talk to your dad because my dad, stepdad, uncle and me all work for the police dept. here. my stepdad has 27 yrs. but anyways, the officer does have to initiate his lighting equipment to pull you over, this whole situation is complicated anyways, my point being is why is he complaining when he knew he was in violation. I can write you a ticket without turning my lighting equipment on, and he did the same thing.

and yes i work for the knoxville police dept. if you dont believe thats your fault. and no i wasnt told off by another officer on this site. i gave some wrong information because i read the thread wrong, but i corrected myself. Let me remind you in every city there are different laws. so everywhere you go your gonna have something different on how that certain dept. operates.
