BE VERY CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!!

I spoke to my parents today and they greeted me with some bad news: My brother got in a car accident late last night (2am). He lived but his g/f, who was in the front passenger seat, died. Both were wearing their seatbelts. She was knocked unconcious instantly and died 15 minutes later. The cause of death is uncertain as she didn't hit the windshield, dash, or door. I'm guessing the seatbelt probably caused it somehow.

Here is what happened: He was driving at about 55 MPH (the speed limit) on a two lane hwy when a lady decided to make a U turn. My brother said he saw her but since he had the green light and she stoped he didn't think anything of it. He doesn't remember if he looked away, blinked, or what, but the next thing he knows the lady tried to make the u-turn and decided MID TURN that she didn't have the time to make it so she STOPED, blocking both lanes. He tried to slam on the brakes but didn't have enough time and T-boned the lady driving her Bonneville (he was driving a '90 Tempo). She wasn't hurt and my brother walked away with only a bruise from the seatbelt and some muscle aches.

The point of this thread: WATCH OUT FOR THE OTHER IDIOTS ON THE ROADS!!!! I can't stress it enough. There was no alcohol involved on either side but you can never tell what the other guy is going to do. If you assume the other guy is an idiot and is going to do something REALLY, REALLY stupid more times than not you will save yourself some trouble. Not that my brother could've really done much different but now he will live with that on his concience for the rest of his life. She was 29 with two boys, 5 and 6. May God be with them!

- When my dad was learning to ride a motorcycle, he learned he said his most important lesson from his buddy who was teaching him. His buddy said "think about all the cars around you. Think about the dumbest thing that each one could possibly do, and chances are thats what they are going to do." Thats the point behind defensive driving. Sorry about your bro's gf, that sucks.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother gf. It's very sad when people die early.

I agree with you about the stupid drivers. When I was learning to drive my mom always told me to watch out because it's not me she was worried about but the other idiots on the road. I always keep my distance. That's the best thing. Even if you take your eyes off the road you could have time to brake.

I totalled a car exactly like that, it's scary because unless you see it comming, there is not much you can do when they block both lanes, your only choices are to hit them, or swerve into oncomming trafic (a far worse option)

Fortunatley, I saw it comming and hauled the car down enough, no one was injured.

In cars like a 90 tempo (or the 89 olds calais that I was driving) death can occur between 35-45 mph.... Bottom line, buy a car for saftey, for that 1 time you may need it.

IIHS web site for saftey.

My condolances, that is sad news... just asure him that it isn't his fault.

thats exactly what my dad taught me too.. drive like people dont know you're there so you're in the clear most of the time. he used to be in a street racing team when he lived in japan, so he's seen his share of accidents/deaths.

and im sorry about your brother's gf man.. its such a sad thing to lose someone you care for at such an early age

Sorry to hear that silverdevil, my parents live east of Carolina in Fajardo. They're always telling me how crazy people drive down there. Law enforcement is not that good there. I wish you and your family the best.

My brother had plans of moving to Atl. and working there. I don't know if he'll be able now because of the traffic court date and all. He was leaving in a week. I'll be there in 3 weeks so I'll probably find out more. I don't really want to discuss much of it over the phone with my brother. You know how it is...I'll take him out for a beer if he's still there and we can have a good brothers night out. Show him I love him and It'll all be ok in the end. God has a plan and when it's your turn there is nobody out there who can save you.

Guy, there's nothing worse then living the rest of your life with the "what if's" what if i did this or what if i did that. I just hope your brother can realize that all the second guessing in the world won't help, it clearly wasn't something he did or could have done. As for the amount of bad drivers out there, I'll tell ya' it's not just a local problem there. I live in Calgary, Canada, and I drive for the post office here everyday. Sometimes it seems no one can see the big red truck that's driving right next to them. The comments been made, but it doesn't hurt to repeat it, drive not only your car, but the car of every idiot around you as well. If you can think of something stupid that could be done in the place you are, assume it will be done, and you're probably going to be right.

What if's are the worst thing to think about, I’m sure almost everybody thought of a couple when the read the thread. I'm 21 been driving since 17 have not been in any accidents. The advice I got from my dad was "you drive down the road you make lots of decisions and the worst thing to do is hesitate, once you make a decision stick with it cuz there is no time to hesitate" I think it applies to this case very well. Sorry about what happened but remember it could have been worse.
