Today I went to a huge lancer meet in huntington beach with my friend. My friend called up his cousin who happens to have a MT 2000 prelude that is stock. He tells me it has 200hp and 156trq, and he tells me he wants to race. At first im tell him "nah, you'lll walk me easily". So he says fine, I have a friend who just bought a 99 sI w/ exahust that will race you, so I said fine call him up. 15mins later this kid comes zooming in the parking lot. We start talking and he ask about my car, im tell him it's a o4 ralliart, 162hp and 162trq and I have I/E. He than tells me he doesnt wanna race, . Later that night, the kid w/ the sI calls a few friends over to peep my car, lol... a few = o5 type-s, turbo MR2, N/A MR2, civic hatch, rx7 and my friends cousin w/ the prelude. They hang out for 20mins and leave. About 2hours later Im finally leaving the meet and the kid in the prelude calls, and says... he wants to run before I go and so do the other cars. So I said cool, but I wanna get home to my g/f. So I meet up w/ all these guys and there all asking who should run me, like my engine is made by christ or something. I asked the type-s to run, be he didnt wanna go, lol. The 89 RX7 said his clutch was going out, The MR2 said he was having clutch problems and boost leak, so I said fine ill run the prelude.

Ralliart vs. Prelude
We line up @ a light, we both have passenger. Light turns green and we launch (I did @ 3.5k), well i get a crappy launch and just wheel hop all over the dam place, 1st gear was useless... blah. Anyways, he wheel hops too but 2nd gear I pull about a front fender. 3rd gear... he pulls hard, gains (DAM VTEC) that fender back and now is a front fender and 4th gear he pulls to 1/2 a car lead and we shut down @ the next light. Im surprised I kept up w/ him and he was too, he still beat me thou... but I asked to race again because I f'd up my launch and he agreed to (he should have never did). We lineup again, This time I launch @ a consertive 2k, and light turns green and beat him off the launch, by 1/2 car! 2nd gear im 1/4 of a lead, 3rd gear and his front bumper is by my front tires (HE'S COMMING), so 4th I decide to powershift in MIVEC and it pulled hard and put me 1/2 a car lead... and I kept it for about 3-4secs and he shut down! He gave me props, and I was soooo shocked I kept up.

Ralliart vs. sI Coupe
The sI wanted a piece of the action, so we line up @ a light. I rev to 2.5k and I launch, i get bad wheel hop... but still manage to pull on him 1/2 a car. 2nd gear im 3/4 of a car, by the time I shift to the 3rd, the straight becomes a "S" curve, but I manage to hold it well and put 1 car lead, 4th gear... it's 1.5 cars and I shut down @ the end of the "S" curve. I roll up and I tell him, I put 1.5 cars on you, he tells me "nah bro, I let off, it was only 1 car". Kid was bs'ing, he was on FULL THROTTLE. He ask to go again because in his words "dude, it was sooo close".

Next race was closer, we line up @ a light I rev to 2.5k, I launch and get same old wheel hop, but now im getting torque steer... CRAZY pull to the right... GAWD DAM THIS TORQUE! Dude... had 1/2 a car on me and I was trying to straighting the car and shift, lol. 2nd gear I crept back to his door, 3rd gear, i mange to put 1/4th on him and 4th i had a 1/2 a car, when I shut down because the upcomming light. He asked to go again, but I was soo mad @ my dam launches and torque steer and said "nah, im tired... blah".

I pick up my friend and I rushed home... my g/f wasnt real happy about me being 2hours late , so I got no pu$$y.

nice races. preludes don't get going real good till about 3rd gear, from a roll it might have been a lot less pretty for you .

So, if you got smoked by an 05 Mustang would you say you lost because of it's variable valve timing? No, it would because of the 300hp. You know, the Lude didnt pull because of VTEC. It pulled because of the 200hp. VTEC is not some boost in speed or power. All it does is open the valves a little more just like every other variable valve timing system.

By the way, the guy in the Si couldn't drive so great.

A 6th gen Si with exhaust is FASTER than a stock 5th gen prelude. If your friend was pulling on you, the Si SHOULD have pulled on you more.

Just some extra info for you.

BUT that doesn't take away from the fact that you got some good kills. Good story.

before the races, we test out each others car. I never been in a "vtec" car, so I was asking the kid in the prelude, is it a "myth", he laughed and tossed me the keyes. OMG... vtec in a prelude is NO MYTH! I swear @ 5300 rpms that thing kicked and went straight to 8k! I was in love, I kept letting it kick in and the exhaust got "NOTICABLE" louder. Ill say one thing, his "vtec" has a noticable kick, but it doesnt feel like it picks up speed much. My "mivec" doesnt have that kick, but you feel it pick up speed noticable. I love the "vtec" profile @ 5.3k... it was pretty cool. I liked everything about this car.

I drove the sI and the first thing I noticed was the clutch is like brick, lol. I stalled just comming out the parking lot, because my clutch is soooooo lite. I had to really press it in, also the gearbox was sloppy as hell, but I based tht on it's 5 year old trans. The thing only had 111trq, but I felt it all in the topend, IT WAS REALLY GOOD. This car felt like it had more trq than 111. Vtec compared to the prelude wasnt as noticable, but it was more like around 5k or 5.5k the tach would move quicker than the lower RPMs. I loved the sI topend and rev to 8k. Didnt like the clutch or gearbox.

One thing is for sure, that 2nd sI race was waaaaaay closer than the first and dude surprised me. I smash on ep's, but the coupe stayed w/ me. Foot mashed to the floor board and no considerable lead happened. IMO the 99sI is leauges better the the ep3 hatch.

you had too much air that it makes your tires hop like bunnies... deflate it to 20PSI and get some thicker wall tires, that will get your goin quicker on launches...

On the VTEC issue, it's great for what it is. It gives a little extra kick, yes, but it shouldn't be worshipped as the end-all solution. Also, the big kick-in-the-pants you feel at 5.5k is a big sign of bad tuning, it should pull hard and even through the switchover.

His sI has just an exhaust, and he bought it used. We think it's a lemon because all the problems he's had w/ it. He was just sooo stoke to get an sI.

Those Preludes are sort of a waste if you ask me. I wanted to buy one back in 2000 when I bought my 01 coupe civic, but they wanted 27,000 for a FWD, 200 hp, coupe. At the time I figured, "it's just that nice of a car I guess." But here I am 4 1/2 years later, thinking back at it, and I'm sorry but those cars are heavy underpowered pigs, and the fact that they're FWD kinda kills it.
