TDI -- You win. They're designed for gas mileage. 90 HP.
2.0 -- You win. Designed for gas mileage and NOT diesel. 112 HP.

1.8T - You're toast. Only 150/180 HP but enough torque to boot.
VR6 - You're burned toast. Even more stock HP and way more torque.

Modified 1.8T / VR6... you need an engine swap and maybe more to keep up.

I ran 15.23 with a nearly stock VR6. Chipped 1.8T's are easy 14.5 or less. BTW, we don't weigh 4000 lbs... more on the order of 3100. I'll pull the actual stats from VW.com if you want.

Yes, so I finally signed up to post this. Time to stop being a floater, I guess.

thanks for the input....he definitely has the TDI, its a piece of crap that he's always complaining is breaking on him, as far as the race goes, he never really seems to wanna keep up with me when I meet him on the highway after school...lol

It's cool man.

They "seem" fast due to very high torque, but MAN does it drop off. The rev limiter is like, 4500 or something rediculously low.

He might be able to spin some tires, but he's going to need 18 seconds or more to finish the 1/4.

A 5spd 1.8T Jetta will own you hardcore. Those tiny turbos spool extremely fast and create instant boost. I have a hard time keeping up with them in my WRX from a roll off the jump. As soon as my turbo hits full boost in 3rd gear it's over though.

The TDI on the other hand. You will completely destroy it.

My brother got a 2.0 Jetta and I have a 4 door LX and i can always take him..(Both autos) as for the TDI thats the slowest Jetta, but it was created for gas milage not power... and also even though it has 150 torque dont let that fool you... and jettas are like literally double the weight of our civics.....

MKIV Jettas ( 99.5-present)

2.0L w/ 5-speed - 2,892 lbs (before driver)
TDI w/ 5-speed - 3,009 lbs
1.8T w/5-speed - 3,037 lbs
VR6 w/ 5-speed - 3,113 lbs
VR6 w/ Auto tranny - 3,166 lbs

HP figures

TDI 1.9L - 90 HP / 155 ft-lbs
base 2.0L - 115 HP / 122 ft-lbs
1.8T older (up to 2002.5) - 150 HP / 155 Tq
newer - 180 HP / 174 Tq
VR6 older 12v - 174 HP / 181 Tq**.
Newer 24v 200 HP / 195 Tq.

** - This figure is a bit underrated. A healthy MKIV 12v VR6 will dyno 155 HP/ 178 Tq. This is what I did with just a new (30k) engine and a better air filter.

Ratios -

TDI - 33.43 Lbs / HP
2.0L - 25.14 Lbs / HP
1.8T (new) - 16.87 Lbs / HP
VR6 (new) - 15.83 Lbs/ HP

Compare to New civic EX - 127 HP / 114 Tq 2598 lbs. ( honda.com)
20.45 Lbs / HP

Soo.. by the numbers and "bench racing." The new civic EX falls right inbetween the 2.0L and 1.8T. In reality, VW 5-speeds are pretty tall, so the 2.0L and TDI will suffer a bit more on pickup, and the 1.8T /VR6's pull longer in addition to harder.

Have fun making TDI boy look like the economy car he is.

If you're asking yourself, yes, I was bored.

edmunds has a 2002 VW TDI at 3900 and some lbs. The 1.8T is really not all that fast although a stock civic will have a hard time keeping up, but by no means will it get wasted. I have race a couple of the 1.8T jettas with a modded civic (only one from a dig) and won both times without to much trouble. The VR6 is a nice car and quick too. I was actually just talking to a guy with the golf and he ran a 14.2 with it. His car weighs in at 3500lbs he is trying to shed some weight and I think that it should be a quick car when he does. BTW where the hell does that car get all of its weight from???

yeah 1.8T jetta would smoke the civic. there at 180hp and gobs of torque that starts at 1800 RPM. I drove a 1.8T jetta 03 and **** that thing was quick. Torque is what yuo feel off the line.

sorry I was refering to the older Jettas not the newer ones

older 1.8T weight/hp=20.4 hmmm looks like the older one and a stock civic are a compleate drivers race.

Edmunds, at one point, listed my 97 eclipse RS as coming with a stock V6. I've refused to visit the site since.

There is no way a Jetta weighs anywhere near 4000 lbs, unless there's 5 passengers in it There's a lot of unnecessary crap in the car, such as seat heaters, traction control, TONS of insulation, lots of worthless plastic crap under the hood, a full-size spare, and a general need to use 3 parts when only 1's necessary. I probably took out about 60 lbs of worthless stuff when I pulled the engine.

Those links are from VW.com. Yes, the older 150 HP 1.8T jettas would be pretty close to a 5-speed EX. A driver's race.

If he chips that TDI, then you might have a problem. Chipped TDI's get like 150 hp, and over 200 ft/lbs of torque.

By 2.0t, you mean the brand-new, not-on-the-road-yet, FSI, MKV GTi right? Otherwise, you need to be boosted to hell (as in 13lbs +) in order to make any power with the 2.0 motor, definitley not the easiest starting point.

The 2.0 Jettas start with 90-95 whp. To beat a H22 prelude, a car thats slightly heavier than a 2.0, you need to be pushing around 160 whp or so. You're not going to gain that from just 4lbs of boost... hell you won't be as fast as a stock 1.8T or VR6 until you're up to the 10lbs range.
