I am looking at a car which has 235/45-17 tires on 17x9 wheels on it and according to the owner it rubs in the rear on bumps. I know the tires seem wider than needed, probably needs 215s, but do you think a slight fender roll would fix the problem? The car will be lowered slightly if I were to buy it. Thanks.

235's? most likely. I can't say for sure about the hatch, but on the coupe/sedan 225's rub, even with a fender roll. What offset you rocking?
I can tell you, from experience, that 215's on a lowered coupe have very minimal rubbing issues (only at full wheel lock, and on the fenderwell lining) with an et42 offset
