99 Honda Civic HX brakes lock up, need help!
I have a 99 Honda Civic HX, the brakes lock up when i drive for at least 15 minutes, brake pedal gets very stiff and car is unable to move after brakes are locked up. It all started when my brake lights would stay on when i have my car off, i went to autozone and asked for a new brake light switch but they told me that all i had to do was to put a bolt under the brake pedal with a washer and nut so it can press the switch, after doing that it solved the problem, next morning i took the car out to work and suddenly brake pedal started to get really stiff.. I talked to my mechanic and he assumed it was calipers and lines. After replacing calipers and lines it didn’t fix the problem car still seems to do the same thing, calipers get very hot and they lock up. Does anyone know what the problem is ?? idk if it’s the brake booster, master cylinder or proportioning valve
Re: 99 Honda Civic HX brakes lock up, need help!
That sounds like the proportioning valve. It's not alleviating pressure. But you mentioned a bolt you installed under the brake pedal with a washer. I would remove that first and go back to how it all worked before doing anything else. You could have inadvertently mis-adjusted something by accident when doing that, so just bringing it back to where it was before the issue might be the smart way to start, rather than further adjusting or replacing items.
If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

It's preventing the brake pedal from reaching its fully released position.
Possible solutions:
1 Adjust brake light switch (see service manual if necessary), IF there's enough adjustment room to compensate for the added thickness of the head of that bolt you installed, or find something thinner than the bolt that will do the job
2 Order the correct part from Honda and fix it the right way #46505-SA5-000 looks like a little under 4 bucks US
At least whoever you talked to at Dangerzone knew the real problem was not the switch itself LOL
