Post Honda Civic 2001 - Power Steering Fluid

Hi,

I was noticing that the Power Steering Fluid kept diminishing every month and can't quite figure out where the leak was coming from.
I placed new Honda Power Steering Fluid and does it again and this time, it will make noise when you lock the steering wheel on the left or right.

I was researching and reading it may be the "O-ring" itself. I bought new "O-ring" from Honda that are orange in color. When I removed the Power Steering Fluid that should have the O-ring, it was not there.
Could it been it just worned out and disappeared by itself?

I installed the new orange O-ring and this time when I do the steering lock test on the left or right, the noise is not there anymore, just a little. Maybe give it a little time to clear out and bleed out the air?

I also accidentally spilled the Power Steering Fluid to another component, not sure if it's the "alternator"? It's a silver mechanism with like copper wires in there and the fluid got some inside.

What can I spray to remove the spilled fluid? Or will it evaporate by itself?
Want to make sure I use the right degreaser and avoid any damager.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Where did you try to put the new O ring?

Sounds like you spilled fluid on the alternator.
Brake cleaner?
De-greaser and a garden hose?

If you found the correct place to install a new O ring, there WAS an old one to remove before installing the new one.

Re: Honda Civic 2001 - Power Steering Fluid

I've attached a picture.

Is that the "alternator" with the "coils" (yellow circle)?

That black tubing, is that the O-Ring (red circle)?

The Gunk Engine Degreaser? Will it work to spray and in there and wash it off after 10 minutes?

Thanks!

Yes

You said you had a new O ring.
Does it look like that?
Where did you put this new O ring?

The O ring goes in the inlet fitting on the pump. Item #20 here

If you put that O ring anyplace else, you better get it out of there before it causes damage.

Sure....I don't think I would wait that long though. A minute maybe, if that, and rinse it right out.

This is the same exact symptoms my Civic was having.

I placed the O-Ring on the black tube piping in "red" circle.

This is not where it goes? This is not the pump?

Thanks

Re: Honda Civic 2001 - Power Steering Fluid

I've attached a zoom out picture.

The one in the big red circle, is this the pump? If not, what is this one called?

The smaller red circle is where I placed the new O-Ring.

If I take out this O-Ring again from the smaller red circle, what is the best way to drain out the steering fluid without getting it all over the alternator? Is there another method to drain out the steering fluid?

Thanks!

That's the pump.

There are 2 #20s used.

Cannot say which one he is talking about though.

Cover the alternator with an old towel.

Re: Honda Civic 2001 - Power Steering Fluid

It looks to me like one of the #20 is internal inside the pump, the other is in the inlet fitting..

My bad, at a glance the first pic looked like you put it inside the hose or something. I actually thought the pic was the reservoir.

Still, there was an o ring in there that was to be removed before installing the new one.

I need a damn vacation.

Re: Honda Civic 2001 - Power Steering Fluid

Thank you all.... I think last year when I had the car "serviced" and "worked" on at that area where the pump, timing belt, fluids, and etc., that's the only place I left it and started noticing it. Now I know not to back to that place again and get any type of service as the quality of service is not there.

I appreciate all your help...

Thank you!

How can you possibly attempt to associate a known problem with someone performing maintenance work?

Unrelated.

That's like blaming todays' flat tire on whomever changed your oil 3 months ago.
