Can Someone Tell Me What This Part Is?

I am trying to replace my cylinder head plug and there is this part (in the pictures below) that is in my way and rather difficult to get off. I just need to know if it is "safe" to just unbolt and remove this part? I have just about zero mechanical skills and really know nothing about cars, just the basics. I love learning motor skills by DIY because I hate taking my car to mechanics most of them are bone heads.. I know the plug is an easy fix and I am not worried about messing that up I just need to know that this part is here that I am messing with. Thanks!

This is the part (the one with the lightgreen cap)

There are two nuts holding it on shown in these pictures:

It's your EGR valve. I think the only way I got mine off was a crow's foot.

so would it be "ok" to go ahead and try to remove these two bolts? The only way to replace the plug is to remove the "egr valve".. :/

Yeah, EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. People take it off to clean it all the time.

Yeah it is safe to remove. I removed mine a couple of times already to clean it.
