Aaaaahhhh! 8 codes thrown, p0300 p0301 p0302 p0303

Sooo, I decided to replace my upstream o2 yesterday. I replaced the o2, bought a rubber grommet for the sri intake and painted it silver n took out the factory intake again.. yada yada. I took out the spark plugs and cleaned/re-gapped them.

So after all that I reset the computer(performed idle re-learn) and after 20 minutes of idling I took it for a drive..Wow! I was surprised by the way it felt it was running good.

Well....i pulled out on Rt.100 and decided to get on it. When I tried to shift from second to third it didnt want to go in gear, and the tranny ground gears and the motor revved up high. At the next light the check engine was blinking, and it was backfiring and sputtering.

I checked the codes today and have p0300(random multiple cylinder misfire), p0301, p0302, p0303(cylinder1,cylider2,and 3 misfire)
I think I jumped the timing belt, but im not sure. Its running rough. I checked all spark plugs, and the o2 sensor connections and tested the coils. anyone else have something like this happen?

The cam sprocket marks line up. I guess the belt didnt slip. What else could it be? Bent valvetrain? Someone help! I have a job interview at 9am and no car

What's the chance that the engine went waaaay past redline? Floated the valves and possibly bent them if that were the case.

I'd probably do a compression check first.

I do believe the engine revved pretty high...

I checked the valve clearance and it seems the valve lash is out of wack. some valves have 0 clearance and some over .012. I have another a2 engine sitting in the garage...it has a cracked block, but the parts are good still. .guess ill start stripping it down :/

I think ill put it back together and drive to the shop. Its only 3 blocks from me. Going to have a compression test done. Anything else to look at? Other tests?

SO how high did it rev? Only to redline, or waaay past it?

Bent valves would have opened up the clearance a bunch. Bent valves cannot close up the valve clearances.
Kind of difficult to assess, if the engine hasn't had regular valve adjustments all of its life. Many/most Honda engines tighten up valve clearances over time.

After a compression check, adjust the valve clearances and then redo the compression check. See if it made a lot of difference.

Next steps depend on the results of this.

Revving the dogmeat out of it could have knocked some carbon loose too. That could get caught in valves and make them not seal well.

it was a junkyard motor with@75,000on it. Its actually the third motor in the car. I just adjusted(and re-checked after 5k miles)the valve clearance 20k ago when I put the motor in. Is a vp, but I already did the full vtec swap+crower stg1 but the engine I got had a cracked block, but its only got @45k on it. Im stripping down the head on it and I plan on building one good motor out of the three I have lol

I guess now is a good time to upgrade the valvetrain...

If I am reading this correct he was never in gear. So I guess he couldnt of bent the valves since the rev limiter would of kicked in.

Can only bend valves if its on a downshift no?

Why did you gap the plugs? Your not supposed to gap irridiums. Go to honda and buy a new set. Dont gap the new ones. See if things get any better.

Also see if your old plugs came loose.

That's the way I read it too, but I figured it needed to be asked anyway.
Maybe he managed to downshift back into 1st instead of 3rd or something.
Some customers don't ever want to reveal the real story at the shop.

Can only bend valves if its on a downshift no?

In theory that's about the only way one can get the engine far past redline and fuel cutout.
I read he has an aftermarket cam, so that throws variables in the mix.
Maybe the valve springs have been weakened from high lift or something.
Maybe he has a modified PCM with a higher redline.
We don't really know.
All I know so far is that it ain't stock.

The OP is on his third engine, right? Must be pretty rough on equipment to be trashing engines that fast. I wonder why all these engines failed????

Just throwing ideas out here.

Re: Aaaaahhhh! 8 codes thrown, p0300 p0301 p0302 p0303

To clear the air onthis...i am using an ecu from an 05 ex m/t. I threw a rod in the first motor(d17a1) and decided on a vtec swap. I did all the work and swapped a full d17a2 from a junkyard(low miles)and put in the crower cam, and found out 15,000 miles later the block was cracked. I dont think it was my fault, but I was past the 30 day warranty.
So ... I got the third motor cheap and just put a new water pump, timing belt, and the cam etc..
Only motor I flogged on was the first motor. The tranny was rebuilt, and I put an oem exedy organic/and lw exedy racing flywheel. I think I somehow popped it in 1st gear. Im now porting and polishing the head from the motor with the crack in the block. it seems good, but im waiting for the head gasket, and arp studs to come in. might just port match the exhaust, and lap the valves. Dont plan on getting much without a tune at this point anyway.
