Rep Power: 0 Cracked Exhaust Manifold Question +
Hello from the frigid Midwest!
I have a 2003 Honda Civic LX that has a cracked exhaust manifold. My question is if any of you have experience replacing the manifold with an aftermarket stainless steel unit vs the OEM cast iron unit. I ask because of the big difference in cost and because I have some concerns that the SS unit will not perform correctly with the computer of the Civic and cause problems including coding. If I could I would go with the SS as it will not have the same problem again that the cast iron seems to be prone to. BTW, I have had dealer maintenance all along (almost) and the vehicle is in good overall condition. And would replacing the manifold (either) be a job I could undertake? I am pretty observant, if nothing else (g).
But there is a second question: I had the timing belt/water pump replaced recently and now get an occasional scream from the v-belt. This was a job done by a certified Honda mechanic "off site". No change in temp. or anything like that. Just the occasional scream. Could this be tension + or -?
Thanks for the feedback. I just joined and look forward to hearing your responses.

Re: Cracked Exhaust Manifold Question +
Is the scream more of a whining noise coming from the belt?
Mine had a whine noise which sounded like it came from the belt (belt never replaced) but when I performed the valve clearance the whining noise went away.

Re: Cracked Exhaust Manifold Question +
As the 2 accessory belts wear 500-1000 miles they need to be retightened. The ridges on the underside actually become deeper from the pulleys and in turn the belt is looser. Tighten the belts adn you'll be fine.
