Angry Brake Pedal "Pop" when 95% down on 04 civic SI (cdn)

hi,

i've been having this problem since reaching about 2000km on the car. When i'm slowing down for a light, the brake makes a "pop" sound when the car is almost at a full stop. I can physically feel it as well, on top of the sound. (it's not the click at the top to disengage the shift ****) Took it to Honda 3 times, they don' konw what the problem is, everything looks fine to them.

Any other 04 civic owners have this problem?? I don't know what to do, it really bothers me because it happens constantly...

i have an 02, and it makes that pop noise also. I read its just brake fluid rushing somewhere, and that makes the noise.

Doesn't it bother you when it happens???? It really bothers me, it can happen even when the car is in park!! It's like having your knees pop when you walk.. you feel it and you hear it... no one out there has the same problem?!?? Ahh.... I bought a lemon...it's only 6 months old maybe I should just ask the dealer to change my whole brake assembly... this is after owning a '90 civic for 13 years without a single problem... now i regret not getting the mazda 3....this is for being too brand loyal... sigh...

it happens to my 02 civic and it's an LX, no abs...I started hearing the sound when I had 20K miles on it, so deciuss' problem might be the same for ours

the sound is coming more directly from the pedal itself and not the actual brakes, and i'm pretty sure it's not the abs because it can "pop" with the car in park. I'm thinking Honda made a bad batch...but looking at the number of replies I don't think it'll be a big enough problem for them to do a recall...... sigh....

just take it back to the dealer, should be under warranty if you have very very low miles.

I,m from Canada, and have the same problem with my car ('03 Sedan). It's definitly in the pedal. Have 850 km's on my car, just started doing it. It feels to be something in the pedal to booster assembly. I'll investigate further and report my findings. I'll still take it to the dealer for warranty, but I like to know what's going on with my car.

OMFG!!! I hate that!! I have an 02 EX, and when I bring the cluth back up, it makes a creaking-clicking-popping sound. It drives me insane!! And the worst part is that you can feel it in the foot, it annoys the s%!# out me!! Took it to Power Honda last Saturday, they said I need a new cluth cylinder or something. They ordered the part.

MidnightAuto, I hope you can figure out what the problem is or if your dealer is able to solve the problem, then hopefully I can bring your findings to my dealer and have it fixed as well...and I'll make them send the information to Honda head office..... 'cuz i'm sure somewhere someone else has the same problem and their dealer was able to fix it for them...

same problem here. Just bought the car and it's doing that. driving me crazy. I read about the tsm where you are supposed to switch the brake switch 180 degrees, but I haven't tried it yet.

Re: Brake Pedal "Pop" when 95% down on 04 civic SI (cdn)

Same thing for me.

It doesn't always do it, it happens when I depress the pedal hard and further down.
It seems to be something mechanical with the brake pedal itself.

In my case, it just happened recently.
I have 121k miles on the car and it started out like less than a year ago.

It's like something is loose in the brake pedal mechanism.

I heard it had something to do with the brake light switch, like it's not aligned properly.

Try rotating the switch to 5 o clock.

Re: Brake Pedal "Pop" when 95% down on 04 civic SI (cdn)

You can try changing the position of the connector instead of switch.
My car connector is set to 5 o' clock, but the brake switch is in a vertical position.
Mine makes the popping noise too.

You can go to an empty parking lot, disconnect the brake switch and see if it still makes the noise when you are using the brake.

Re: Brake Pedal "Pop" when 95% down on 04 civic SI (cdn)

The switch is indeed making the noise when stepping on the brakes. I removed the switch and the noise is gone.

I removed the brake switch and lock washer.
I installed the lock washer behind the mounting bracket. It was installed in front of the mounting bracket from the factory.

Then I installed the brake switch turning it counter clockwise to lock it in place.
Now the switch is at 5 O' Clock position, but it still makes the noise.

I will put some grease on the switch plunger and the spot where it makes contact with the brakes paddle.

After everything is installed.

If repositioning the brake switch doesn't resolve the issue, then you may have to replace the brake pedal assembly.

I removed the brake switch and spring from my pedal assembly and there were a lot of play in the pedal.

This pin has a lot of movement in it.

There are two pedal assembly showing for part #18.

I changed the brake pedal and the popping noise is gone. The White arrow on the new pedal has some markings in the metal the old one didn't.

New brake pedal from the junk yard.

Looks like an inspector's or origin marking. When Honda outsources parts to other companies, it probably specifies an ID mark of some kind for traceability, esp if the part is from an obsolete gen. Toyota does this as well.

Re: Brake Pedal "Pop" when 95% down on 04 civic SI (cdn)

Mine started doing it after I rebuilt the front calipers. I had what felt like a brake shudder while easily breaking to a stop. Felt like a warped rotor. Close inspection made the rotors look OK. I rebuilt calipers and replace pads and it did not help. It was the rotors. They had what looked like a hard spot on them. Sanding would make it go away but it was back in a month. Replace them and pads again fixed it. Anyway now 6 months later I get this pop. Only after it sets a little while. If you break on and then off, then on will not do it. Takes about 5 minutes for it to repeat. The noise is at the caliper. Makes it fill like it's in the pedal. For some reason, now the piston is pulling a little too far back leaving a little too much play between brake pad and rotor. Better then a drag but not sure how to fix.
