9th Gen CVT Failiure
9th Gen CVT Failiure
Hello everyone, I have a 2014 Civic EX with a bad transmission. So after doing some research a while back I had determined that CVTs in these cars typically last around 115-130,000 miles. Me, with prior knowledge that CVTs had a bad track record. At 150,000 miles the inevitable happened and it finally failed. No warning. I have performed fluid flushes at the recommended intervals and babied it with 90% highway miles. Suddenly lost power to wheels and engine was free wheeling after gradual acceleration down a road. Obviously the belt broke since I have 0 power to the wheels no matter shifter position and just revs engine.
This leaves me with a mere rolling chassis. As someone who works on cars quite regularly I feel I have the competency to fix this myself, having done multiple engine/transmission swaps in the past. My issue is that the only available transmission is $1400, two weeks away from my possession....USED. I would rather have a new transmission or rebuilt one. Why can't I find ANY parts for these transmissions or ANY transmissions remanufactured ANYWHERE online???? When they fail, do you just throw them in a scrap bin?
If I am going to spend $1400 on a used transmission and spend all the time swapping it, only to last maybe another 50,000 miles, why wouldn't I just buy another used 7th gen for $3000? Can someone give me a just reason to bother swapping used transmission in these vehicles? I am seeing these cars going for less than $1000 otherwise. It's pretty disappointing when you can't even get 200,000 miles in a modern car because of a weak transmission design pushed by the EPA in the name of fuel economy, which is a whole other tangent. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Re: 9th Gen CVT Failiure
Couple things I want to clarify first.
You currently have a 9th gen, and you're asking why you wouldn't just go buy a 7th gen outright instead of replacing the trans? Just wanting to clarify there because it sounds like a typo.
Not super familiar with CVT, but perhaps this is what you're looking for?

Edit: You definitely do not have a 9th gen. I'll see what I can find and report back
Someone can confirm, but I believe the CVT is interchangeable between gas and hybrid engines.
