Talking Washed my engine tonight!

Well, after 84k my engine finally got her first wash! I've been reading these forums about what to use and I purchased some Simple Green and this is what I did:

1. Covered the battery, alternator, fuse box, air intake filter... with plastic wrap.

2. Lightly sprayed the entire engine with water for a few seconds.

3. Sprayed on Simple Green everywhere I could reach.

4. Waited about 10-15 minutes.

5. Sprayed engine with water really well to rinse off Simple Green and other grime.

6. Will leave engine sit overnight to dry out completely.

Well, I'll see if she starts tomorrow morning! The engine sure does look nice now. It even smells fresh! My wife thinks I'm an idiot.

That's one of those things I ought to do before I ship the car to Germany. Don't want my engine bay looking nasty for the nice German officials who have to deem my vehicle road worthy.

I actually just washed mine the other day... My friends works at Subaru as a porter and he had some stuff from work..

Just sprayed it all over the engine bay (i had a bag over my intake) and then hose it off, then had some other spray to give it that shiny look. BAM! Done. LOOKS AMAZING!

I've done mine like 3-4 times or more since I got my car 6 months ago and I'm doing it again tomorrow

P.S. MREEZYSMRS your engine looks EXACTLY like mine almost, except for the blue paint (I'm referring to the stock engine excpet for blue wire loom)

What is the blue material made of? Is it like a tape or rubber fitting? I would like to do this to some things in my engine as well. Oh yea, where did ya get it!

I think it's silicone hose tubing. I usually just clean my engine up with some armorall and a cloth. I'm afraid to start hosing in there.

Dude, you should have no problems hosing it down in there - not like we have a distributor to get wet, like the older vics. Just don't go nuts spraying the alternator (i get it wet sometimes though) and you should be fine. Hell, I've even got the HID ballasts wet; I just didn't turn them on for a while after to be safe. Remember to apply some dielectric grease around the battery terminals to prevent corrosion after, cause Simple Green removes it.

Never did get it started again.. I had it towed to a junk yard.

(Just Kidding!)

Actually, it was fine. Just make sure you cover the areas mentioned to be safe. Heck, I saw on TV where they use a pressure washer and just spray the whole thing with no care at all. I guess if you let everything dry out long enough it will start. I'm not that bold yet!

I use my pressure washer once a year to clean my engine. I just don't purposely blast the alternator. Engine cleans up like new. I do start and drive it dry right away though. This keeps water from sitting in places an causing damage or rust.
Usually a 10 minute spin dries everything completely.

I was careful but you are correct, I'll use something else next time. I also changed this in my instructions. Good point, thanks!
