02 civic lx TDC sensor

Hello all. I have searched and read and read till my eyes are bleeding. So my wifes civic over heated a while ago and would occasionally shudder right after I started it AFTER it was warmed up. I replaced the thermostat, coolant temp switch, coolant fan switch. No more overheating issues. Had it tested for a blown head gasket and it checked out. On my way home from work it threw a TDC sensor code and went into limp mode. Thing is while it was down from the overheating issue I replaced the tdc sensor, valve cover gasket and grommets, new spark plugs wires and oxygen sensor. Why would that sensor go out within 200miles? Sorry for the long post but I'm getting pissed at this damn car lol. Thanks for any info you all might be able to provide!

Re: 02 civic lx TDC sensor

I'd guess
-non OEM sensor (hondas are vary specific, I had a generic tdc in and it would run flsometimes, sometimes not)

or perhapd
-you didn't get the alignment right with the pin on the sensor
-loose connector/not pluged in all the way.

Thanks man. It was a sensor from advance auto. Going to pull the case off and make sure it's not wet or anything then I guess replace with an oem sensor.

Re: 02 civic lx TDC sensor

You can always grab a used one from a junkyard if you don't want to buy new. Just keep in mind it may also be faulty.

Keep an eye on the overheating issue. Head gaskets are extremely common in these engines and they won't fail normal head gasket tests.

Brotatochip, thanks man. I just can't understand it. No coolant in oil or vise versa,no smoke from tail pipe. It's not loosing coolant. I'm baffled because the car ran sooo good for a few hundred miles n boom square 1 again. Leaning toward the cam slop. Might slap a new sensor in and sell the damn thing.

Re: 02 civic lx TDC sensor

The non-OEM sensor almost definitely is causing issues, this is something we regularly see. Get that fixed and see how it runs.

If the head gasket is bad coolant and oil do not mix and you won't see any smoke from the exhaust. When the head gasket fails they let combustion gases into the water jacket, these gases then push coolant out of the engine and into the coolant reservoir (eventually overflowing it). You would notice low coolant levels in the radiator and high/overflowing levels in the reservoir.

Here's a good thread with more info on the head gasket if you're interested.

Re: 02 civic lx TDC sensor

I appreciate the link man. I had my sisters shop do a test on the coolant and it came back negative for exhaust gases in the coolant. No overflowing of the reservoir. They said I needed to clean my iac valve as I had an intermittent stumbling of idle after the car had been driven for an hour or so and shut off then restarted. Also a broken front motor mount. I will get an OEM TDC sensor clean the iac and install a new gasket and replace motor mount and report back.
