D17A1 ECU with a VTEC head?
D17A1 ECU with a VTEC head?
So I blew up my current engine, my coolant overflow tank developed a hole while driving, the block overheated but the temp gauge stayed the same so I had no idea the engine was overheating till the oil thinned enough to kill the engine, when it couldn't maintain speed I popped the clutch and the gave out. Not sure how I never heard it happen but I sent a connecting rod through the oil pan. Now I bouncing back and fourth between get a new engine or buy a new car completely. To get to my question I'm wondering if I can take a VTEC engine (thats all I can find anywhere) and run it with the non VTEC ecu. Obviously I'm just looking for point A to point B, so I'm only wanting to see if it will run and drive fine. Any help given will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
-Matt.

Re: D17A1 ECU with a VTEC head?
It will work, just VTEC will never engage. Only takes a couple extra wires to make it work though
Re: D17A1 ECU with a VTEC head?
I'm assuming "adding a few extra wires" would not include tuning/ chipping, also If I were to make VTEC engage would I have to worry about fuel delivery or is it just valve timing on the D17? Cause if all VTEC does is change the cam profile on the D17 then I would have no problem adding in a toggle switch to the solenoid. Kind of a stupid question I know but I have really no experience under the hood of this car.

No tuning will be necessary. In addition to wiring in the solenoid, you will also need the proper ECU. The stock ECU does not recognize VTEC. After that, you're good to go.

- 7th gen D-series engines
- ECU cannot be tuned - it will revert to stock in no time.
- VTEC-E - basically a 3 valve to a 4 valve engine - not a lobe change.
- The VTEC also involves a lot more than RPM to activate. It uses throttle, load, etc. a switch is not going to get even close to the stock map
