Overheating, no coolant loss. Bogging down & sputtering after startup

Sorry if this post is a redundancy. Plz forgive.

I have an 02' civic, manual trans, sedan. It was having major overheating issue that I traced down to the heater core. After flushing the core & radiator it cleared up a bit, but began to sputter & try to stall *after* starting, then it snaps out of it & runs fine. Will still overheat if idle too long, as I never hear fans kick on. 3rd gear seems to catch a bit & sometimes grinds. Theres rattling in the muffler & I assume its bad cat converter. -- any helpful advice is appreciated. Thanks

What method did you use to flush heater core?
What method/steps did you use to bleed air from the coolant system?

You may want to check for a failing/failed water-pump by removing the radiator cap while engine is cold. Let idle untile operating temp the rev engine slightly while looking into the radiator neck. Coolant current should move swiftly in one direction when the engine is revved once the thermostat opens. Keep as much distance from the radiator as you can while looking into the radiator neck and you may want to wear goggles.
