Temperature problem?

Hi, i’m new to this forum so im if this is in the wrong category.

I just bought myself a 2002 Honda Civic 1.4I VTec and im having some issues..

So first off:
my tenperature gauge needle is always standing halfway, even before I put the key in the ignition, what could this be?

Number 2:
after every drive and opening the hood I notice coolant all over my engine, coming from the pressure cap.

if someone could help me out it would really be appreciated!

thanks for reading

Re: Temperature problem?

Coolant coming from the overflow reservoir on the left side of the engine bay? That’s a bad head gasket.

Re: Temperature problem?

Yes. If any coolant is overflowing at all (unless way too much has been added), it’s a bad head gasket.

Re: Temperature problem?

Well that really sucks.. I’m waiting for a new overflow cap to be delivered and really hope that’s at fault, otherwise i’ll have no choice but to replace the gasket.

would you also happen to know what causes my gauge needle to be stuck in the middle?

even when I don’t have my key in ignition its halfway. Is this a Dashboard problem or the themostat?

I can’t find the anwser tot his anywhere so I would really like to know..

thanks for the replies

Re: Temperature problem?

For the coolant temp gauge, the needle could be getting stuck. You'd have to investigate. If the back panel/sheeting of the cluster is sticking up it can prevent the needle from moving.

Here's more info on the head gasket:
