Sounds exactly like failed headgasket, compressed air test into cylinder needed to absolutely make sure.

How inclined are you to work on a car?

Agree
Actually, when it comes to 7th gen 1.7L engine there's nothing mysterious about a blown headgasket...

When car cools off, antifrezze return to radiator from overfill thank.
DOES return and the radiator stays completely full? Are you positive about this?
The radiator level is supposed to stay completely full to the top at all times. It doesn't take much fluid loss at all to compromise cooling efficiency (overheat)

Replace swollen hoses
Make sure radiator fans actually operate when the coolant temperature is hot enough.
