Crank sensor engine light on...help

I got a Honda Civic 2001 Lx

Crashed it last winter... done all sorts of things to fix it now.
For various reasons... i've had the timing belt on and off maybe more than a dozen times now....

Ive recently been getting the P0336 diagnostic code.
I just replaced the old sensor... which I had totally broken the bolt-hole on. I thought that would fix the issue.
---it didnt.

The timing MIGHT possibly be off.... but i just feel like its not. It is seemingly difficult to get the timing belt on if the cam sprocket isnt lined up.

When I start the car, it cranks for a little bit longer than is normal... but not that long.
It idles OK, but is a bit wavy perhaps.

Any input? I'm tired of taking this car apart....

Did you cheap out on the sensor? Honda's don't take well to anything that isn't OEM.

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

Update:

So I tested the Crank Sensor.... took my voltmeter, grounded the black - and shoved the red down into the back of the plug on the Blue wire.
disconnected the ignition coils
then turned the crank by hand.
I got a reading of 5v on / 0.2v off with the sensor - which should mean the sensor is fine and works.

BUT NOW!!!!

When I go to start the car
It starts right up! No long cranking.
But then IMMEDIATELY dies.

I got a P0336 reading on the computer.
Reset it.
And dont get any reading now. No light, but I doubt the car is on long enough to get a reading. But then again, the computer shuts the engine down.

wtf.... did I totally off up the sensors wireing? I tried wiggling them around. Nothing.
no spark? I checked all the coils. Seemed ok.

damn.

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

Another update!

Turns out I can keep the car running if I give it some gas.
I kept it at 3k rpm for a bit, temp gauge went right up on the car!

the engine seemed to run ok.

started to smell funny

turned off the car. went for a look.

the exhaust manifold was RED hot!

lolz. fml.

I'm done for the day. back into it later.

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

Either timing is off or exhaust restriction

Timing isn't too difficult to check:

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

The saga continues...

-Still have the cheap Crank Sensor in there, but it checks out as good. I tested for 5v on/off when I hand turned the engine.

-The sensor plate seems to trigger the sensor good. I checked the plates interaction with the sensor.

TIMING: wtf. Like, it could be this, those damn marks on the cam sprocket are oriented not at right angles to the head. IDK. I got the straight edge out, I know that "up" is really like @ 350 degrees. You line the "horizontal" marks up with the plastic molding on the head? Thats what it seems like.
I've done the timing on this car several times prior - never had any issues.

Of course, every time I change the timing, the engine responds differently. But the P0336 still comes on. I disconnect the battery in-between things so the computer should be reset.

WHATELSE could this be? At this point, I just can't see it being the timing.

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

Can you post pics of the timing marks? Yes "UP" isn't really straight up, you're using the lines on the side to line up to the top of the head anyways.

Also, did you check for an exhaust restriction as suggested above? See if it runs better with an O2 sensor or the header removed.

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

sorry, didnt get any pics.

OK so - I can't seem to get the timing right.

I line the marks up on the crank sensor plate thingy - I line up the marks on the cam sprocket.

I slip that belt on - If I ease the tension back on from the tensioner I'll keep the crank on her marks.

-so, I get all marks lined up proper (I'm certain of this), then I spin that bad-larry round twice counter-clockwise.
get that crank back on the mark....and BLAMO! The cam sprocket is SLIGHTLY too far clockwise. Closer to 360* the the cocked 355* its supposed to be. The marks on the sprocket put the wheel like half a tooth to far over.

Its off by a damn hair! This can't be right. Is this normal?? I don't think so. Is that enough to trip p0336??

I know my tensioner is a bit wonky, but I don't think it could be that??

The sensor plate has a little bit of play in it? A little.

I did have the camshaft out a while ago?

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

Pics would still help. Try lining up the camshaft then looking at the crank marks. Is it off a full tooth? Crank spins twice as fast as the cam. If the crank is lined up and cam is off a half tooth that means with the cam lined up the crank would be off a full tooth.

There are timing marks on the engine side of the camshaft sprocket as well if that helps.

Re: Crank sensor engine light on...help

Hello folks-

Update.

After months of struggle and pain, she's running again!

Right before I got the code to go away I did TWO things - so hard sayin what the real solution was.

1) I cleaned the dirty battery terminals
2) I shelled out for the $80 OEM sensor, as opposed to the cheap aftermarket one.

Runs like a top.
Timing was always fine.

Thanks for the input.

I'm putting money on the sensor, too. Glad you got it worked out
