Rep Power: 0 Crankshaft seal and reseal plate $141.00
Hi all,
New Here and wanted to ask what a reseal plate is?
Info: My car (01 Honda Civic Coupe LX) has 200,000 kms and need to do a Timing Belt change. I researched how to do a proper one but unfortunately, I don't have the time nor the tools to do it so I asked a dealership for a quote (Dealership because timing belts are serious).
Timing belt ($440), Water Pump ($303), Tensioner ($171.05+42.30 labor), cover gasket and spark plug seals ($51.31 + $42.30 labor), camshaft and crankshaft seal (20.57+ 141 labor) or "CRANKSHAFT SEAL AND RESEAL PLATE $141.00"
Does anyone know what a "Reseal plate" is and is it recommended for the best?
I wanted to do all the seals because a) 200k and b) I don't want to come back to them for oil leaks due to old seals.
Any help is appreciated!
Thank you

Seeing your quotes make me very happy I invested the time to learn to do it all myself. The reseal plate stuff seems like more of a optional thing.

The only “plate” would be the plate of metal that is Hondabonded onto the rear of the engine block that the rear main seal installs into. Based on the other labor prices your quoting, that would be about $1000 labor plus a $30 seal and a tube of Hondabond
What seems to be amiss and possibly your additional $141 would be to pull the oil pump and replace the oring that is likely already starting to leak.
If you break away from a la cart, replacing the water pump $303 would require the removal of the timing belt and reinstalling the timing belt. So that $440 is $35 for the belt and $405 labor to tear open the new belt bag since they already have to reinstall some belt after changing the water pump.
That $42.00 for the tensioner labor is to unbolt just 1 bolt, arguably faster to do than to document the a al cart labor fee.
I could go on but hopefully you get the point. I suggest you spend a evening researching how much it,will cost you for actual genuine Honda parts for the repair and then contact one or two import car shops and tell them you want to know their flat rate labor charge would be to do the entire job with parts you supplied.

Wow. Those labor charges are crazy. It seems like there are some duplicate labor charges to me. You can't do the water pump without pulling the timing belt and then easily exposing the tensioner, seems like double dipping labor. But that is what the dealers do. Sorry you don't have time, it is actually a kinda fun wrenching job.

Wow! So to install the water pump, you have to remove or tinker with the timing belt anyway? These stealerships making me a fool. Might as well be lawyers, I'll put them in the same boat.
I am actually looking around for an independent mechanic. I found. one yesterday with good reviews and a Honda specialist.
Thank you all

Thank you guys!
I found a Honda Specialist Mechanic who can do the timing belt, tensioner and water pump for $460 labor instead of $588 at the Scammership.
I should have known. Just a few weeks ago, my window regulator broke (the wire), the window fell down into the door panel. I was ignorant at the time and took it in. The service said I can leave the car and they can take a look at it; I park outside my home and it was raining so I made the decision to leave it there. I went home to look up on the regulator problem. I found the part, an instructional video and called up the scammership. I was told "It might just be a plastic pin that got stuck, let us diagnose it". According to sources, if the window won't go up, the wire is broken and the regulator needs to be replaced. The next day, I was going to get my car back but they already installed the new regulator.
I got charged $70 just to diagnose the problem which in my opinion, even though I'm not a mechanic, I can guess the regulator is broken and needs to be replaced, no need to do a diagnostic.
In the end, I paid for it; $70 diagnostic, $200 something for the part, $300 for the labor which I could have all done myself.
