2002 Honda Civic Ex Manual Bucking and Bogging in all gears
2002 Honda Civic Ex Manual Bucking and Bogging in all gears
Originally I had a code of P0340. Replace the camshaft sensor and CEL went away. Went on a test drive and the car was bucking in every gear and has super low acceleration power. Almost undriveable due to lack of acceleration. Check engine light never came back. I'm stumped and need the car to run as it is my every day driver. Can anyone help me out? Suggestions?
Re: 2002 Honda Civic Ex Manual Bucking and Bogging in all gears
Still no check engine light but I have a good air pop going on from the engine. Going to check compression and see if it is a head gasket issue. Seems like it due to the loss of power and bucking. I hope not!!!

Yes OEM sensor was installed. Runs great at idle and no CEL. go to drive the car and it has very little power and bucking and all gears. Rev it up and sounds like a exhast leak but near the engine. Heat works great and no leaks to speak of. If the timing was off wouldn't it run rough and misfire? I don't have a timing light to test it currently. Thx for your response! I appreciate it very much
Re: 2002 Honda Civic Ex Manual Bucking and Bogging in all gears
So one day I was driving and kind of punched the gas because i had a guy riding my ***. Next thing I know I have a check engine light and loss of power during acceleration. At first intermittent but after work went to have the CEL checked and had the P0340 code. Changed the Camshaft Sensor and CEL went away but the bogging and loss of power still present. Rev the engine and feel air escaping around the front of the engine. Not sure where yet it's raining here right now and I don't have a garage. Runs decent at idle with no CEL.

that's why im thinking you have a restriction.
is your cat part of the manifold? or is it after the manifold?
either pull off the manifold or disconnect the exhaust before the cat and try revving it

I found a leak in the exhaust where the manifold meets the downpipe. Going to fix that and see if makes a difference. Will update when I have it back together. Thx for the comments. Hope this is what the doctor ordered. 😵

So I finally had a chance to mess with my car again. I fixed the leak I had in the front and unhooked both O2 sensors. The Bucking went away. When I took it on the highway at higher speeds felt like it was starving for air and still bogging. Sensed a bit of restriction and was feeling some blowback from the manifold. I'm guessing the catalytic converter is clogged. What would my best options be in this situation? I live in Michigan

The idle also feels fine. is the catalytic converter the first thing I should check or is there something else that I'm missing?

Try removing the front o2 sensor and see if there's any improvement with a hole in front of the cat.
or if the cat is under the car disconnect the exhaust before the cat and see if that's better

Exhaust restriction
Most likely the cat was damaged during the poor running condition of the previous sensor failure(s)
Removing the O2 sensors helps a little because that opens up a 5/8 inch hole in the pipe so exhaust can escape, but that's usually not enough to confirm full power
To verify next I would unbolt the front pipe from the manifold so exhaust is free to escape before the catalytic converter
Yea it's gonna be loud---fire it up, rev it to redline, drive it if you have to, all power should be back to normal
So that confirms the exhaust is restricted.
Next, disconnect pipe from rear of cat and inspect the rear side of the catalyst substrate (its guts).
If it appears to be intact and unbroken when looking into the rear of the cat, then replace the cat.
But if it's obviously broken or chunks of the substrate are missing, those chunks are probably lodged somewhere downstream in the rest of the exhaust system and may cause restriction problems even after replacing the cat. (If you beat the pipes and muffler with your palms or rubber mallet, you may hear chunks rattle inside the system)
Gotta make sure all the broken pieces are removed so the entire system is free of obstruction.

It ended up being the catalytic converter! Was full of debris. Luckily I have another 2002 Civic Ex 4 door that I have for pulling parts! Looked up the parts to make sure they would transfer over to a Coupe. Everything transfers except for the muffler. Luckily my muffler was fine. Bolted everything on O2 sensors and all. Connected the battery and fired it up. I let it run for about 5 minutes to see if I got a check engine light. No light. Test drove it about 10 miles on the highway. Everything seems to be working properly. Thanks to all of you who commented on my post! You were all a big help. Thank God I have this other 2002 because that would have been very costly.

It did not get driven enough for the computer to begin and carry out its self tests twice in a row, and/or if any of several other codes have been set or are pending those will cause the computer to suspend the cat monitor tests.
