No start warm engine - Civic 2002
Hi guys,
question for you...I own a 2002 Civic, starting last week, after quick trips or when the engine is warm it wont start, no crank, just like the battery is dead...After few minutes or when is cold it starts without any issues. I figured that this could be related to a main relay. Any ideas where is located and which one is? The ones behind the glove box (brown and blue)?
Thanks!

Automatic or manual transmission? When it won't start does the rest of the car have power or is the entire electrical system completely dead? Do the gauges light up and read normally with the key on when this happens? The relays behind the glovebox have nothing to do with why it won't crank, it will crank without those. Those relays are just to provide power to the ECU, fuel pump, reverse lights, and o2 sensor heaters. The crank sensor doesn't have anything to do with this either, it will still crank with a bad crank sensor.

Re: No start warm engine - Civic 2002
The starter could be going bad, sometimes they won't work when hot when they start failing. What I would do is keep a test light or a volt meter in the car and check for power at the starter while its acting up. Make sure you have power at both the big white cable (main power) as well as the smaller black and white wire (the signal for the starter to engage). The big white cable should have power at all times and the smaller black and white wire should have power with the key in the crank position. The problem with this method is you need someone to hold the clutch and the key while you check for power, so depending on where you are and whether you have someone else with you when this happens that may be a problem.

Now my question...if the starter is an issue, it shouldn't make that cranking noise? To make you understand what happens its like i don't hold the clutch, all gauges, lights comes up, but nothing happens. Thanks, i ll investigate the starter as well, hope to solve it.
Re: No start warm engine - Civic 2002
Not necessarily, it may or may not make a clicking noise or try to do anything. Something in the starter could be failing and not making contact when hot because clearances change with temperature. The starter is the most likely component to be affected by temp since it's bolted to the transmission, which is bolted to the hot engine block. There are no relays or anything for the starter under the hood. The other possibility is that you could have a failing clutch safety switch or relay, although that's not as likely as a bad starter since the problem is temperature dependent and both of those components are inside the car and therefore not affected by engine temp. How often does this problem happen?
