OT: The Decriminalization of Marijuana in Canada
Well I just watched the news, and it really looks like it's going to go through. The Senate has proposed to legalize Marijuana since current anti-drug campaigns is not only NOT deterring people from using drugs, but is costing the government money where it can be allocated elsewhere. The first approach is to decriminalize marijuana before actually legalizing it to see the impacts. Users caught with several grams of marijuana will be issued a fine, much like a speeding ticket if you will. When they legalize marijuana and the sale of it, it will be restricted to users over the age of 16. Yep you read that right, 16. The reason being is that Marijuana is far less harmful to society/human body than Cigarettes and Alcohol.
Now my own 2 cents. It's about damn time. People are going to smoke pot regardless if it's illegal or not. From a economic point of view, this is nothing but good. Billions of dollars circulate the black market every year. By legalizing Marijuana, a lot of the money will enter our economy boosting economic growth and propserity. I was expecting Canada to make this move when we hit a recession, but the business sector has been doing quite well after Sept 11 due to lower Mortgage/interest/APR rates. Also, I think legalizing is better as a whole. As of current, many Canadians indulge in Marijuana, by legalizing it, the government will be able to regulate and control this market. My concern is that the government will add a lot of excise tax, but hopefully with all the new suppliers from this motion, it will come out priced lower than the black market. If the government decides to add the same amount of excise tax as cigarettes onto weed, than people will still continue to buy the drug in the black market and that will defeat the whole purpose of legalizing it. Also, many criminals in jail or future criminals will longer go to prison for Marijuana, there by freeing up space in our prison cells. I forgot the actual figure, but it roughly costs the government $20,000/year to jail a criminal. This will also mitigate the long waits for a trial by eliminating former felonies.
So what are your takes on this? Good? Bad? About time? Never smoked it anyways, so don't care?

I think you make very strong points
I am all for it.
I am not a big pot smoker or anything but as long as they can regulate it properly it should be a positive outcome.

Actually, it won't make the economy better simply because consumers will have to pay tax on weed. (Creates Dead Weight Loss). I personally only think it's good if the GOVERNMENT starts selling or you have to have a LICENSE to start selling since we'll have drug wars on WHO gets to sell on who's territory and all that crap.
We'll see though, this is only proposed and I don't think our PM really wants to be known as the guy who legallized drugs in Canada. =)

hum.... but then.... if the government does regulate it..... then obviously they are going to control the quality of the weed.... i mean.... what will happen to NORTHERN LIGHTS, M39, or BLUEBERRY? will the government make weed less potent..... oh plz god no...... i hate sess!.... man and if they start to tax the crap outta weed just like what they're doing to cigs..... man..... us weed smokers r screwed..... it'll probably go back underground..... but then..... i'd really like it to be legalized too, cuz i hate the cops.... they make me paranoid.... man i've almost been busted twice already..... i hate hiding to smoke weed..... smoking pot should be comfortable, thatz what i'm saying......... I LOVE WEED!

BlueTroll, I really doubt the potentcy of weed will go down, I think it might even go up. Basic economics will say this. If weed were to be legal than there would be many new suppliers out on the market. New suppliers means competition among each other, therefore competitive prices and better quality of weed. I foresee the future as marketing weed in 2 forms. One is cigaweed and the other is fresh buds sold in packages.
First of our last recession was early 90s (91-92).. We were never in a recession after sept 11th.. and second it wouldn't create a dead weight loss because by legalizing it, it would cost less, more people will buy it; In a way this works in reverse, because marijuana will deter people from alcohol and cigarettes.. As for the tax, hmm.. good thing.. government gets more money.. and weed becomes cheaper for us.. hmm. why didn't we think of this sooner..
