insurance - Do you tell them about your mods?

For you guys in Ontario, do you notify your insurance company of any mods that you put into your car?

I'm looking around for a new insurance company, and because I already have two accidents under my name, my selection is narrowed down to a few companies....

I'm looking around, and many places now ASK if you have modifications done to your car (at least on the web quotes). I'm thinking that if you don't tell them, and you get into a (god forbid!) accident, whether your fault or not, you will only get back stock parts.....

If you did notify them, did your premiums go up? Remian the same?

I'm a little concerned now about getting a new alarm. A new alarm is supposed to PREVENT theft, which should decrease premiums....but it might actually increase them! I also dunno then about stuff li ke HID kits.... at $1000 or so, I'm sure I'd be paying a premium!

BelAir quotes also ask if you've tinted your windows.... Think about it. If one of your windows needs replacing, it will also have to be re-tinted...which costs $$$$$...

they came over and took pictures of the cars

i could claim like my exhaust or something since it was in the pic
but that may or may not have increased my pricing

although my company doesnt lower rates for having an alarm installed

shouldnt it though? dangit

HA! Unless it was one of those satellite vehicle tracking systems, they don't give you dip of a discount for an alarm system. Alarms just scare off lil' kiddies, pros wipe out any alarm system 30sec or less regardless. Besides u get discounts for home insurance 'cause most alarms are centralized to a monitoring centre.

? The stupid online auto quoting system on BelAir Direct asks you dumb questions like "Does you car have an immobilizer? ignition kill? security etching? etc.etc. Security Bar?.....

My sister told me to stop leaving my golf clubs in the trunk...... apparently it's not covered! That would be covered under my HOME insurance.....Aw crap! I keep the trunk locked at all times, and the EL has shaved trunk keyhole, and I've locked the trunk release.....but my clubs are expensive!

Anything Bolted or screwed to the car is considered a permanent piece and is covered by Insurance.. I took pics of all my sound system.. Photocopied Receipts of all my sound system.and the insurance company has it in a folder for me so that everythings covered without question..I also have a signed copy from then of the same pics backs of each stamped and signed....and they don't give alarm discounts because an Alarm is an anti-theft device with starter kill...which our cars allready have anyways!!..

Cheers

actually some insurance companies will lower the price if you have an alarm installed but it has to be an alarm that they've pre-approved and its different for each insurance company. there's a little clause in the contracts I believe that have a listing and a rundown of exactly what is and isn't considered a "proper" alarm by their standards. that is only for some companies though, not all, and it is up to their discretion...

if you want you mods covered no matter what you have to tell them, and list the price so they can put a special endorsement on it - otherwise you get actual cash value not replacement costs - thats what we do at economical insurance - i'm in claims so i do this stuff all the time - list the parts you want looked at - mind you, your gonna pay for it - i personally wouldn't

Hey Cue are you going through RBC insurance? I didn't have to take a pic of my car, nor did they ask if I had any mods either. I wonder if I should tell them
