anybody with any type of side skirts... pls read
i was just curious... do any of you take off your side skirts for the winter?
i took mine off a few weeks ago... to do some small mods on it.... (and lucky i took it off 'cause i was plowing snow with my oem front bumper as it is... cant imagine what the snow/slush/ice would of done to my skirts)
well, .... when i took it off, i realized there was a pile of frozen ice on my side skirts... basically from all the slush and snow that my wheel rides up and or just somehow.. snow gets on it.
and because of the cold weather we've been having.. it turned into chunks and bricks of ice.
basically an amount of weight being applied on the inside of my side skirts
i have wingswest side skirts.... the skirt is basically in an L shape. imagine a box.. and imagine yourself writing the letter L. that's basically how my skirt is shaped.
So, because of the weight... the skirt is basically in a different shape on the bottom. it's not a L shape no more. (90 degree angle) .. it's more of a 120degree angle now.. but that's only in the middle... b/c at both ends.. the skirt was screwed on.
i was wondering if it's possible to heat up urethane and slowly push/bend it back? hahaha.. but then again... i dont want to damage the paint.
i noticed the odd shape on the bottom b4... but i thought that's how it was shaped and i just never realized it. but i guess not.
im not sure how the other side skirts are made and shaped.... but just curious if you guys take it off? and if you guys might of noticed of having the same problem?
i've heard of ppl taking it off for the winter... i had 3m dual side tape... i double taped it too. so it was a b i t c h taking it off in the winter... let alone in the summer. 'cause those tape will STICK. now i gatta rub the tape marking that's left behind before i can put the skirt back on.....
just wondering what you guys used...? if you took it off for the winter?
Thanks

Ive thought about taking mine off too. I hate the sound of snow underneath my car. Im not very handy at doing that kind of stuff myself and I didnt know if it was worth it to pay my mechanic to take them off and then put them back on again in Spring. Plus I was worried about the 2 sided tape leaving marks too. So far I havent noticed any warping but I haven't looked at it too closely.
I havn't noticed a problem and mine it's fiberglass too, I'l have a closer look tomorrow. What I do it blast all the snow away at least once a week and get a total wash to get the ice chunks and snow off. I need to have a closer look tomorrow I had 5 girls in the car and I scraped huge at school in the parking lot gotta scope the damage. I hate the sound of the side skirts just scraping along, at least I get a new paint job in a few years.

as for the markings.. just use liner ..sp?
it wont damage the paint.. i've done that b4 already. just a lot of rubbing effort

You should see the huge chunks in the rear of my body kit, I'll kick one off and get a picture. I was riding on the highway and thought I ran someone over, it was just a huge chunks of ice fly across all the lanes. Stupid winter, it gets cleaned tomorrow though inside and out.

My sides are from Japan are made of fiberglass. Haven't even bothered to look underneath. Too scared, lol. They look ok right now even though theres a massive amount of frozen snow stuck to the bottom of them at the front.

My full body kit is on right now. Mississauga owes me some serious loot, cause I plowed their streets for free the night of the big dump. I just give my baby a good kick all the way around to dislodge the accumulated snow and ice. Oh and my semi-weeky coin-op trips help. I just stick that (relatively) warm jet of water under the car.

I have the wingswest and I love how it just piles up inside the wheelwells and stuff. Look at my member gallery to see my broken wheel and all the snow piled up on the sideskirt.

I wouldn't bother tho because our sideskirts and front and backs seem crazy strong. Those mothaz were heavy when I received them!! I don't think you should have a problem if you bolted on the sideskirt underneath the car too. That's what that extra flap is for.
Imagine people that buy OEM bodykits and those people that drive around chevy malibus and toyota corollas with the kit. I don't think they take off their skirts.

I've the full OEM aero package on my EL and have not had any problems. I have alot of snow piled up in my wheelwells, front bumper, etc from driving in some of the deeper snow on the sidestreets, but since I park in the garage at home and a parking garage at work, it all usually melts away by the time I go out again.

yes.. i know you can bolt on the middle of the sideskirts.
do you remember that tthere are gaps in between each end? well, that's where i took out the chucks and chucks of frozen ice.
it is not possible to kick those off because the side skirts is more of a "J" shape, not a "L" shape..... not to think of it.
so it's basically stuck in there until it is able to be melted....
not sure if it happens for you, but we get temperates as low as -35 with the windchill.
