Police cost each Canadian $250: StatsCan
OTTAWA (CP) — Canadians paid $7.8 billion last year for police services, an average of $250 per person, Statistics Canada says.
The total cost represented a five per cent increase from 2001 after adjustments for inflation, the agency said today in a report showing that both police budgets and the number of police officers increased during the last five years.
The agency said there were 59,494 police officers across the country as of June this year, up by two per cent from 2002.
And as of June 15 this year there were 188 police officers for every 100,000 population.
However, "despite increasing in each of the last five years, the 2003 rate of 188 is still nine per cent lower than the peak rate of 206 in 1975.
"Canada has fewer police per capita than many other countries," Statistics Canada said.
It ranked 24th among 29 developed countries in 2000, tied with Japan and New Zealand.
And Canada's rate was about 25 per cent lower than the United States.
The agency said that 9,352 female police officers in 2003 represented 16 per cent of total officers, double the proportion from a decade ago.
In British Columbia, "nearly one-fifth of all police officers ... were women, the highest proportion in the country."
Among provinces this year, Saskatchewan reported 201 police officers for every 100,000 population, the highest rate. Newfoundland and Labrador had the lowest rate at 148.
Here are the number of police officers per province as of June 15 and (the total per 100,000 population):
Nfld.-Lab. 768 (148)
P.E.I. 218 (158)

N.B. 1,280 (171)
Que. 14,368 (192)
