AMG
Well, given the price difference, Z06 all the way. One is a performance car, the other is a luxury sports coupe/convertible...
Besides, for the price of the AMG you could do the LPE Stage II on the Z06 as well as different suspension, brakes, and tires and the Z06 would run circles around the AMG with ease (more ease than it already does).
LPE stage II is a twin turbo package that runs near 140mph in the 1/4...
But yeah, one is a Mercedes, has an auto tranny, and a retractable hard top, is quiet, etc...
The other car (Z06) is very well engineered for its price, puts performance above everything else, and can be modded too).
Yeah, the Mercedes looks nice...

Actually, both cars are marvels of engineering respectively. The AMG for its technology, and the Vette for its price/performance...
Heck, I'd take a McLaren F1, but certainly would "settle" for a Z06
Of course, if money were not object, we wouldn't be driving Honda Civics either

Wow nice vid! The SL55 gets a jump on both races and leads for a while but the Z06 catches up and dominates.
Personally I think they're both wonderful cars but they just serve different purposes. The Z06 is all performance while the SL55 is more of a highway cruiser with some extra power.
(I think the SL55 does decent considering how fat it is )

I'd like to know why you would compare an SL55 AMG to a c5 vette anyway. Two COMPLETELY different kind of cars, and most importantly, 2 COMPLETELY different type of buyers. The SL is a great car to cruise in and it looks 100 times better than a vette. Plus, if an SL owner wanted to smoke a vette, he would have used his ferrari to do that

Which car looks better is a question that can only be answered by the individual being asked.
Both cars are very nice in my book. However, I'd take the vette anyday. I see mercedes and vettes all the time like everyone else. The mercedes look nice but they never capture my attention the way a vette a does.
EDIT: ;aljfl;j

All the more reason the Z06 will kill 99% of the cars on the street
After all, the odds of seeing an SL AMG on the road (as well as the Ferrari) are much more slim...
I guess for me, I'd feel much more "successful" with a Vette, but then its also a car I could afford sooner
Mercedes makes great cars, but I just don't have any passion for them... thats of course my opinion.

rofl...how ironic this is. Im with my parents coming home from a swim meet and they needed to stop at sams club (warehouse store). I grumble but give in. We pull into the parking lot and what do I see but....a brand new SL 55 AMG in Titanium color. Wow
The thing was absolutely amazing. It looked like stock 18 or 19's, I couldnt really tell. The rotors were drilled and were probably a foot long or more in diameter. It has these sweet vents build into the body, on the hood, and on the fenders. Quad exhaust, man...
I really cant get over how incredibly awesome this thing looked in person. I stalked the car for about 15 minutes, hoping the owner would come out and not mistake me for a car jacker. I really wanted to talk to him, I mean, not everyone can afford a $140,000 car.
I didnt realize the car was a V8 though, I thought it was V12
