why is it so stressful to buy a car?

and why do dealers make it that much worse?

So I am already in posession of a nice shiny black civic ex coupe, but the financing for it isn't solid yet. I have had the car since monday and i call in today and they say to call back tomorrow morning since the finance dude who is dealing with it won't be back till 8:30am. I then call back and speak to a sales manager who transfers me to someone else. This person was attempting to be reassuring and told me not to sress out about it and to let the dealer do their job and get the financing all set up. He said it can take a week or slightly longer sometimes for a dealer to get the answer they want from different banks. He was attempting to make me happy, but it's just a little difficult when i have this car that isn't mine yet. My insurance company doesn't even know i have it yet. I didn't want to tell them until the financing was done with. So lets just hope i don't get in an accident, because it would be a really bad situation. Anyway, i just needed to vent there and release the crapload of stress that I have right now.

Has anyone else had to go through this crap of waiting and waiting and waiting?
I guess i just need some sort of reassurance from someone other than the dealer.

I hear ya...I brought my dad along to co-sign (in case I needed it since this was my second car I'd be financing) which I had to drive 30 minutes in the opposite direction to pick him up. I get to the dealer w/ my trade in and the one thing I wanted to know before purchasing was the interest rate I was able to get. Well needless to say, that was the last thing I found out.

Second, my dad & I filled out the credit applications. Then they said I wouldn't need a co-signer, so they had me fill out my own application & tore up the one we had originally filled out together. I left the dealership w/ everything "not so" finalized. When I got to my dad's house, there was a message on his vm that we needed to go back to have him co-sign. You would think that they would've kept both applications on hand since it wasn't finalized, but they didn't.

I ended up having 200+ miles on my civic the first day I had it and an apr of 9.9%! And all they offered in return was a free tank of gas.

I told em they can kiss my

I spent over 5 hours at the dealership. I got an inicial offer of 18,200 for my LX So, after like 2.5 hours of going back and forth and finally getting pissed at the damn sales manager he offered me 14,700. I wanted 14,200. My inicial offer was 13,500 and not a penny more. Well, he showed me all sorts of documents and I would've walked out because I didn't like the price but I wasn't sure my other car would make it home (about 2 miles away) so I settled. They said I could have an EX for 15,900 but I decided I'd get the LX (now I regret it) Then they washed the car (It was snowing in Wa that day) and brought it in the dealership to take pictures and crap. All in all I think I still got a good deal, but had I had a car that would've gotten me back home I'd have at least started to walk out.

I walked out on negotiations twice before I even agreed on a price for my car. Talk about sweating it out...I wanted my ride, but I wanted a good price. 7.6% APR too!

well I got the price i wanted for the car. That is the one good part. I should have stuck for the lx coupe, because i knew i would have had the financing go for it a lot easier than the ex coupe. When i saw the numbers though, i figured i might as well try for the ex. But the price for the EX was $15,125, the price for the LX would have been $13,750 for the ones on the lot or $14000 for a black one that they would have had to search for. I figured the extra 250 was worth the extra time and effort. Anyway, my trade in is where i got screwed, but that is because i had a nissan and they aren't worth a damn when it comes to resale values.

Buying a car sucks, I'd rather win one, like that will ever happen. Anyway, you have 30 days to insure your new car in NC, so check with some local insurance agencies, preferably your company but not your branch, and see how long they give you. I do believe it is state law, so you may want to ask your dealership too.

The prices at carsdirect.com are also dependant on area and demand in that area. Those same values are slightly higher in arizona.

I didn't have too much trouble other than the fact that the salesman was more of an a$$ hole then usual. It took about an hour to come up with a price, I knew what I wanted so it wasn't too tough. Paid $16,950 for my EX coupe and had the "$1400" Si Rims thrown in for "free". So I came back a few days after to pick it up and sign the papers, spent about 45 minutes doing papers (all of it was ready when I got there). Then went out to get the car. Well, the idiots installing the wheels dented the roof (probably throwing a wrench over the car), and it made it all the way to me before someone noticed. Some bang up job of a walkaround the sales crew did. So after I went off in the parking lot (profanity and everything... and can you blame me?) they asked if there was anything that they could do to help? Any accessory I wanted? I told them to find me another f*ucking car. They looked it up and could not get another silver one, so they said they would fix the roof to brand new condition and add anything I wanted, so I told them to put an In-dash CD Changer in and if I wasn't satisfied that it was perfect, then I was not going to take the car. Well, sure enough, I went back, the roof was perfect (I compared to another car) and the changer was in. Was I glad that it was fixed, yes, should it have happened at all, absolutely not. Unfortunately, there was no other Honda dealer in town and I didn't want a VW Golf (my other option). So for sticker ($16950) I got a $19150 car.

I guess i just need some sort of reassurance from someone other than the dealer.
Buying a car isn't stressful unless you make it. Those dealers are there to make money, not to give you a good deal, and personally, they are animals looking for a kill.

Buying a car is fun, especially when you catch the stealership lying to you consistently and then bring it up to them, and then walk out on them, and then come back to deal with somebody else and inform them of the last situation and that salesman says they won't treat you like that and they treat you the same way. Buying a car is fun if you don't let them take advantage of you.

I was not made aware of leather or an OEM body kit when I bought the car. Either they weren't available, or I missed them when I was reading stuff over. In addition to that, I was driving over an hour each way to work, so a CD-Changer sounded like a darn good idea. leather seats wouldn't really matter (never had them, so I don't know what I'm missing) and I can live with out the kit for a little bit. I'm happy now that I have no problems, the car has a sunroof and a stick shift.

My car buying experience was pretty enjoyable. I took my roommate who used to sell Chevy's. He knew all the tricks and really stuck it to 'em, and it was really amusing to watch.

I remember him saying to the salesman and the sales manager, "Man, when I quit selling cars there wasn't enough soap in the world to make me clean."

He caught them several times trying to fudge the numbers.

Oh man, it was good times.

Whats the term? I'm getting 6.15 apr for a 6 year (i wanted low car payments, not pay it off quickly plus I hope to pay some extra with any bonuses I (hopefully) get this year and the next few)

Anyway, usually when you go to a car dealer how they get a loan for the buyer is the buyer fills out the application for a loan, they submit it to several local banks and credit unions. Often the bank or credit union pays the dealership a percentage of the loan to encourage the dealership to send business their way. It may seem you're financing through the dealership, but really its through 1st Bank downtown with a higher interest rate than if you went into the bank yourself and applied for a loan.

When I bought mine, I knew where I would get it financed. I knew the rate I could get and at what term. I picked out the car, signed the purchase agreement, and waited since the dealership didn't have the color I wanted. I then went to the credit union, filled out the paper work, and they took a copy of my purchase agreement. The dealership told me I could pay with a personal check, so I came in, wrote my check, and drove away.

From the same place I got my loan, I could have .gotten 5.74 for a 4 or 5 year loan.

Shop around for your car and your financing.

I used to sell cars some years back and know what your talking about, I wasn't very sucessful at it because I was to honest, it didn't feel right to screw people for a extra $50. I never liked letting people take the car without financing, but the idea was that if you took it off the lot you would fall in love with it. So when the financing came back the dealer ALWAYS got the highest interest rate first, thinking by this time you didn't want to part with the car and would accept anything thrown at you, just so you would buy it.

I bought my 02 EX over the internet with the dealer, I found the car I wanted on thier lot, got the VIN number, got pre-approved for financing, and told them what I wanted to pay. I went back and forth via e-mail with offers and counter offers, but everytime the dealer replied they told me to come in. When I did finally go to the dealer, lo and behold, extra charges for delivery, prep, etc. Well the dealer thought they had me because they picked me up from my work and drove back to the showroom, thinking I had no ride I'd give-in. Well after a bit of bichin and getting now where on them dropping the extra charges, I picked up the phone off the salemans desk and called my wife to come get me. When I walked outside, guess what, the salesman said they would cut the charges "in half", I said I wanted the price I was quoted and no more. 20 minutes went by untill my wife came, when I got in her car the salesman said they would approve the price. Now I was pissed off for them wasting all my time so I made them throw in Floor Mats and 2 oil changes.

You got to be firm with them and don't fall in love with the car. Just my 2¢

Alrighty, so they finally came back with an offer. I was finally approved, although for a higher interest rate than I wanted, but a lower monthly payment. This was of course through the dealership. I have also decided to request a loan through my own credit union. They haven't contacted me yet though about it. The interest rate is 10.5% which is .9% lower than one of my visa cards. Kind of pathetic, but I don't need a cosigner that way and the monthly payment would be $377. It sucks because i lost so much on my truck. I would have been fine if I didn't have to deal with the loss, but I was tired of the crap gas mileage i was getting. On my first tank of gas i got 33mpg with the civic, where the best I got with my frontier inline4 was 23mpg. So hopefully as i continue to drive the car it will get better mileage. I still haven't gone over 4000 rpms. I guess i feel like being nice to the new car. But at least I don;t have to worry about this car not fully being mine. And I love the car. So smooth and smooth and smooth. I almost feel like i'm in an accord

this monthly payment is based on a 72 month loan. They had values for a 60 month loan, alhtough i'm not sure if the apr was different at that point. When I eventually go in and sign new paperwork, I'll see what I can get. I should hear back tomorrow from my own credit union. I'm not really happy with them though since they screwed my mom over on the interest rate last year when she picked up a new camry. I would just assume not give them my business, unless they can give me a lower interest rate, then i'll be fine.

good thing my dad bought the car for me, i bet dealers would rip me off big time. but it wasn't stressful for my dad at all, we told the dealer we wanted a silver ex coupe auto, they didn't have it, so they told us that they will call us when they got one. a couple days later, we got a call, they got it. we went there, checked the car out, everything was fine, went in to negotiate. my dad knew a few people that bought ex civics recently, and most paid $15,500 or more, so he was stuck on $15,500. he kept telling the dealer, $14,000, the dealer stayed on $16,000, after just a few minutes of negotiation, the dealer went to $15,000 final offer. my dad told them for that price, we want some extras, a spoiler, tint and moonroof visor, they agreed, and we signed the papers, whole process took about an hour ( checking the car, negotiating, signing papers ). my dad had the money to pay for the car in full, so he did that, but they did offer him 1.9% apr for 36 months, guess it pays to have a perfect credit report ( my dad pays the bills the day they arrive )

oblivious9 is an unknown quantity at this point
Originally my apr was over 10%, then they said they would give me a break w/ 9.9% if I purchased the 10 year warrently which actually made the monthly payments over $100 less. Call me a sucker because I know I was ripped, but the car I had kept breaking & I desperately needed a new car & did not want to invest any more money into fixing my old car. I didn't exactly had time to plan it out thoroughly, so they knew that had me. Plus they gave me a good amount on the trade in, so I was satisfied w/ that.

(also keep in mind that I bought my car in 2001 before september 11th, so the apr's for hondas were sky high)
