tl;dr and personal notes
Lots of give and take, but generally the same. Best fuel economy seems to be the 10th gen sedan with a CVT and 1.5L turbo engine. Worst is the 10th gen Sport Hatch, but also the most powerful of the bunch. The 9th gens are middle ground of average fuel economy alongside most of the 10th gen models, with the exception of the marginally outlying turbo sedan cvt and sport hatch models.
My 2018 Sport Hatch did fantastically when the tank was nothing but flat highway miles and running 91 octane fuel, with my average fuel economy failing to dip below 36mpg with cruise control set at 83MPH (often staying between 38-42 MPG). My average city mileage tends to be about 32MPG, but then again, my daily transit to work is all of 10 minutes of driving with 6 traffic lights between home and work. Lots of idle time and 0-[speed limit] acceleration, so those cause a significant decrease in average MPG.
