If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Technician E says 'get on my level!'
Try all 9 test areas. Test G1 looks easiest, only 30 questions.

Imagine PAYING MONEY out of your own pocket, to subject yourself to these tests for certification....to prove you know what you are doing, even though so little of the general public has any clue what ASE is, what the certification tests are, and couldn't care less. (Everyone wearing a sewn on name tag is exactly the same)
Imagine taking 8 or more of the ASE tests in a single evening, after a full day of work, without so much as a drive-thru cheeseburger to keep your stomach from grumbling for the next 1-5 hours.
Imagine the stress of knowing that passing tests might mean a pay raise.....Failing tests might mean a significant pay cut.
Imagine half (random #) the mechanics in this industry couldn't pass a single ASE test if their life depended on it, and couldn't care less.
Imagine how discouraging it would be to know that many of those people who couldn't pass a single ASE test are able to make more money than the knowledgeable tech who spent his/her own money to take the tests to prove competence in various areas of auto repair so he can get a pay raise....that might amount to a mere pittance.

I don't want to imagine that. Sounds like a crap ton of stress that could pay off if it goes really well but could end up hurting you.
What do you call a Dr that graduated last in his class and cheated trough his classes?
Dr.
The tests seem like a great way to determine a good technician from a bad.

The ASE tests are a waste of time if the technician isn't going to earn more money for the certificate. All the certificates are good for is to hang on the wall where customers can see them so that they get a good feeling about their dealer mechanics having brain cells. At least that is how it works where I am at.
Knew a tech that had a load of certificates, he couldn't figure out how to torque a wheel so that the lug nuts would not fall off before the next oil change.
Knew another tech that wasn't good enough for anything other than oil changes. He was in the same room the last time I did the ASE testing. He passed something like engine or brakes that night.
Technicians that know how to fix cars generally get the crappier work and warranty pay. Joe Greasespot will do maintenance flushes and brake jobs all day long.
I actually had a certificate hanging on the wall with all the other near the customer waiting room. It was a photoshopped version of my real one. It included the following certifications: "door opener" "tool polisher" "stirring specialist" "parts hanger." I still have the fake, it lives in the frame behind the real one on the wall.
