Hey Guys,

In general do you guys know what may cause the civic 01 just having 22 mpg. Isn't it suppose to be 31 mpg in city ? I only drive it to work everyday about 5 miles each way in town. Could that cause the problem? Is there anything that I should check to gain more mileage?

The low milage is from the short drive...I use to do that for school and I could barely get 27 with some trips on the highway to my friends.

I just changed my tire, it's stocked rims. Changed my oil every 3000 miles, haven't checked my air filter yet, but I just couldn't believe that it only gets 22 mpg. Recently I found that my front strut is leaking a little bit, I brought it back to Honda service, and they said those leaking are normal. I did find that my car need alignment done, i am gonna do that this week, but do you guys think that gonna cause the problem? Or is there anything else that I have to be aware of?

Short distances in the city kill the gas-mileage terribly.

The only thing I could tell you to do is to let your car warm up more before you start driving it on your short commute, but that might be relatively pointless.

yea check ur air filter, i know its gotta be dirty as ***. I change mine every 5000miles and i would get 33/41 easy on regular

Oh, is that really a recall for the front strut? Do you know where I can download that recall, because I just came from the dealer and they said the only recall for my car is the headlight and they fix it already.

the strut issue is not a recall, its a tsb. im pretty sure your bad milage is from the short distance you drive. ive gotten 19mpg in my civic before and thats cuz i was driving around in the city. all the trips were less than 10 mins. last time i checked, i got 39mpg on the highway.

ya city mileage isn't that great. 20-22 is average. but you can always check...

but alot is based on driving style. keep it under 3k most of the time and you'll be fine. altho its hard to drive that slow in a vic.

If you dont know how to check the various things people recommended, you could check your mpg by filling up your tank and take 2-3 hours out of your day and just drive on the freeway and fill up again too see your highway milage is running correctly. this is more of testing your driving conditions instead of the car. if you change your driving conditions and still get poor milage, then its most likley your car. most likely even after you check those various parts of your car, youre still gonna make a test drive to see the mpg has improved, so save your self some time overall by testing your driving habits first.

ya the real indication is non stop highway driving to measure it. city driving only the hybrids get beter mileage. also cold weather because a motor uses tons of gas before it warms up which takes longer in winter.

80 miles a day to adn from school on highway and also an addictional 5 give or take getting to the highway but overall 14k miles i did in one year

yeah in winter i ususally get like 23-28 mpg. during summer i get 25-35 mpg.
90% of the driving I do is at around 45mph - 55mph on the roads in my city. all the roads are basically 35mph highways, with some side streets. But since the speed limit is way too slow everyone does at least 45.

Yeah, I think that's my problem. Because I live in minnesota, it's always darn cold here, and from home to work only about 5 miles one way. The speed limit here is about 35 mph - 45 mph. I am gonna check on my air filter and the plugs, I think I haven't changed those recently. Do you guys know if the air cleaner element would cause this problem too or not?
