Anyone? My car has close to 84k already (2002) and I am getting close to this point if you read the owner's manual. I think they say change it at 110k. Anyway, I bet this is big bills to have this done. I don't really want to do this myself but was wondering if anyone has and how difficult it was. If you paid to have it done, how much was it? Just curious. This will be the only thing I would have Honda do for me I would imagine.

Damn, should have bought a Toyota. Chain timing. Never needs changed. Doh!

Go to a honda shop and have them do it. If you have to ask how hard, you don't have the tools or the experience to do it properly without help.

Should cost 300 total, and replace the tensioner and water pump at the same time. Adds 40 dollars in parts, zero in labor, since they are already off.

Yeah same here, a buddy of mine just had his break on his the other day.

Makes me nervous just driving to work and school. I'll prolly just change mine myself but then again........Honda might get a call if I get some money.

Is that 110k mile close to what it should be or is honda just trying to get people in to spend money? Mine's getting close to 90k, so I might need to look into it.

Its probably about right. Go have a shop check it and see if it is ok. I am going to do that soon. I get paranoid about this kind of stuff.

$300 isn't all that bad if you think about your time and effort and all the other stuff that goes along with trying to do something like that yourself. Thanks for the tip about the other parts, I'll mention this to Honda. I was worried because I had an Acura Integra once and that cost well over $600 back in the day to have that changed. I thought that was a little high but I was young at the time and didn't know any better.

I would hate to think what would happend if the belt broke while you were driving.

about 4yrs ago i had the timing belt & the drive belts replaced in my 95 civic ex, i had it done at a good local shop, they charged me $400, of course that was 4yrs ago.

Its not really that bad if you have the right tools. I did it at a friends place with a lift and air tools so we took it out in three hours and only cost me like $200 total with parts.

I don't think its really doable in a driveway. You should check out the water pump also, its easy to change when doing the timing belt and only costs like $40 but it will save you in the long run.

BTW I did this at like 100K and the parts sure as hell didn't look like they had near that much wear. I could have easily waited another 20K.

i dont understand y honda isnt using the slient timing chain or osmthin that doesnt need replacing like other manufacturers

~100k is perfectly normal. As already mentioned, expect to dish out several hundred dollars, replace water pump, AND don't forget to check your valve tolerances if you haven't had them adjusted by now.

If the timing belt did break then one of two things would happen,

1. I'm not sure if the D17a is an interference type engine. If it is, when the belt breaks and you're driving the pistons will smash into the valves. Will have to replace the damaged pistons and the bent valves.

or

2. No extensive damage will occur if the D17a is non-interference type.

I just called Victory Honda in Muncie , IN and was given a price of $559 for a timing belt and water pump change. That is way outrageous to me - I doubt the parts cost Honda $50 bucks and a good technician should only take a few hours since it is something they do on a regular basis. I'll take my car elsewhere. I just turned 100,000 miles so I still have time before the scheduled 110,000 miles.

That's highway robbery and I'd make sure I let the manager know it. Shop around man! You don't have to take it to a Honda dealer BTW. There are plenty of good technicians out there who have experience with our cars. Shop, shop, shop my friend! Make sure whoever does it has some type of warranty on their work before you sign, even if it's 90 days. It's better to check than to drive away and the following week you belt breaks. Sometimes you have to be careful who you take your car to. Ask questions and talk to managers only. Some of these dork techs have no clue and may have just started yesterday. Don't just talk to some guy sweeping the floor. Ask specific questions like have they ever replaced a Honda timing belt? Who did it? Tell them you want that tech to work on your car. If you let them understand you are serious about this they usually do a better job. Trust me, I've been burned before and now I know who to talk to.

Local honda here charges $345 If I remember correctly. That is just for the timing belt. You will get charged labor for the pump and whatever else has to be done. Just because they have it appart, they will still charge outragous prices for parts, and then will charge for labor according to what the book says for each item. To sum it up, if the timing belt is being replaced, it would take 30 minutes< about> to replace the water pump also. It doesn't work that way. They will look up water pump, say 3 hrs and then timing belt 6hrs=9 hrs @ what? around 50hr for labor= $450 then add parts $40 for a pump and $20 for a belt = $510 minus tax. This is the way I see it.
