Question Question on Key replacement Insurance

Hi, new member here and not sure if this the right forum.
I just purchased a new 2017 Civic hatch EX-L Navi and during the purchase process I turned down the Key Replacement Insurance along with some other overages thinking it was just a way to get more money from me.
This is my first car with the remote and key less start. Really cool and I love the car.

After doing some research on the cost of the Civic key replacement I am having second thoughts about not getting the insurance.

I guess I could go back and buy it from the dealer, or are there better options available to me.

I would appreciate comments and suggestions from the group
Thanks
Jim

Re: Question on Key replacement Insurance

that should be a typical "Key with chip replacement " You can get one made up

where they make chipped keys. not all big chains make them but they are out

there. not sure where your from.? but here in Canada

i can go to Partsource and have a chipped key made up for my Civic . for around $80 - $100.00

you will have to program it not a big deal easy to do here on the forum they also cary aftermarket

remote fobs for the doors easy to program them to work. no need for spending

the Xtra $$$ at the Honda stealer dealer...

Thanks, I am in New Jersey. The remote has 5 buttons and the dealer said replacement could cost up to $500.00.

Re: Question on Key replacement Insurance

Welcome to the forum!

It's a pushbutton start car. (keyless access)

The physical (emergency) key hidden inside the fob is cheap enough, MSRP $25ish plus cutting it if they charge for that, but no programming is needed for JUST the key.

(Dealers are free to mark up parts prices beyond MSRP, and many do)

The fob, the important part that allows you to start the engine, is about 55ish MSRP, and must be programmed to the car which is a bigger expense at most dealerships.

The fee to connect a scanner and program it may vary from dealer to dealer, I'd expect it to be about 1x whatever their posted labor rate is. (call and ask your local, and shop around)

I don't know if the aftermarket has come up with any options for these smart fobs.
You might contact locksmiths to see if they can do immobilizer and keyless access programming on brand new Hondas....it probably isn't as simple as cloning an older style 'chip' key.

Oh ...its a push button start on 2017's civic wasn't aware of that. that there was a emergency key hidden in the key fob... that could be made up with-out any programming ...? that would def help in a emergency. great post EZONE .

Your F&I salesperson told you this?....their pay depends on you buying this protection package, along with the tire protection, paint and fabric, undercoating, etc.

Ask about the key and fob in the parts and service departments instead of the sales department.

Yeah, some manufacturers may be priced that high. I'm sure your dealer could jack the price that high too, but I'd expect in the 200 beans range for one of these to be done.

BTW, this has happened several times in my shop.......
I assume because many people seem to just toss their fob/keyring on a seat instead of having a nice safe keyslot to stick it in, it slides around/falls off and they end up losing the key/fob INSIDE the car....so when I try to program a new one, the system won't allow it because it can still detect the 'lost' key somewhere inside the car.

Then we have a problem....first issue is actually finding the lost fob in the car so the new one can be programmed, then the owner usually doesn't think they should have to pay for the new key/fob set they ordered and had cut and programmed to their car.

That key can only get you in the drivers door.

It cannot get the car to power up and start the engine.

Oh ...its a push button start on 2017's civic wasn't aware of that.
Higher trim level uses keyless access. Lower trim level still uses a regular key.

If the first locksmith can't, ask if they know of one who can.

In a large city I'd hope at least one has spent money on the equipment necessary to handle this sort of work.

I live in a relatively small burg, our best local lock shop can program keys for "the big three" but is not equipped to do our 'foreign' cars. Dealer is the only game in town here for cutting keys, programming the electronics, and retumbling cylinders for Hondas sidewinder style locks.

Another option:
You can get genuine parts through Honda dealers who sell online at wholesale prices, but watch out for shipping costs.
Majestic Honda in Rhode Island (linkyclick) is one I often use for hotlinking parts catalog pictures, but there are several other Honda dealers around the country who sell well below MSRP too.

Then you may run into issues with a local dealer who doesn't want to cut any keys you didn't purchase from them.

Re: Question on Key replacement Insurance

I called my Honda dealer and they priced a new remote with programming and key cutting for $310.
An independent Auto Locksmith Specialist I found on the web (Stu's Easy Remotes in Eastern Pennsylvania) that does only autos and he quoted $249.99 plus tax for a Honda OEM remote, key cutting and programming under a non- emergency purchase. I would have to bring the car and proper ID to him. I am thinking about getting an extra key.

Re: Question on Key replacement Insurance

I'm also in NJ. I called Pop-A-Lock,and they cut the key and programmed it in my car (in my driveway) for $265 total (with a Honda key - not a cheapo aftermarket key). More than I hoped to pay, but they showed up within an hour from my call , and did the whole job in 20 minutes. I'm rationalizing as a stupidity tax. In 55 years of driving I never lost a key until now.

Re: Question on Key replacement Insurance

A bunch of claims, losses, compensations. What do you face when your property is damaged, stolen or confiscated. In such cases, insurance is like a magic wand that can help solve your problems. If your chosen tariff covers a lot of damage, then it's worth it. For example, in my package there are just such conditions. Believe in the foresight of the most thoughtful people. You do everything right when you think before. And in our country, insurance is a must. This way you will feel calmer knowing that you are protected. By the way, the office in which I was formalized is called Vasa Advokatbyrå.

Call and ask. It’ll vary too much per driver.
